Tatung Co., Taiwan’s largest consumer electronics brand, has won recognition from several organizations for its design of rice cookers that brings high technology even to a quotidian home appliance.
The Tatung TAC-11A captured the Taiwan Excellence Gold Award with a design combining environmental protection concepts and some of the world’s most advanced nanotechnology.
The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) cited the Tatung product along with seven other winners of the prestigious Taiwan Excellence Gold Awards in April. A panel of international judges with expertise in R&D, design, quality and marketing selected the winners.
The Tatung rice cooker that won the Taiwan Excellence award uses a special mold-resistant anti-bacterial material for the handles that is made from silicone and silver nanoparticles. Silver is a naturally antibacterial material. Silver nanoparticles easily interact with other particles and therefore have increased antibacterial efficiency.
Tatung last year won a product design award from Germany’s iF for its TAC-10B rice cooker. The iF awards are among the most coveted in the design community. Market observation, close contact with experts, early recognition of new trends and their reception are the essential strengths of the iF product design awards, according to the iF website.
In Taiwan, consumers have long prized Tatung rice cookers, which have more than 95 percent of the market thanks to their unique heating technology. The distinctive design of the multi-purpose cookers makes stewing and steaming simple. Food heated in a microwave may become dry, but Tatung’s rice cookers keep food moist and tasty.
Tatung’s design of its rice cookers reinforces the company’s reputation for reliability and simplicity. A one-piece handle on the rice cookers reduces the component count. Bakelite used for the lid and handle provides perfect heat insulation. The use of recyclable metal meets environmental standards and reduces the impact on the environment.
Advanced composite materials are used in the cooking pot for the latest Tatung rice cooker. An outer layer is made from aluminum that provides good thermal conductivity while stainless steel forms the inner part of the pot. The composite material provides advantages for a variety of complex cooking needs.
Nano ceramic is used to coat many of the key parts of the cooker, helping to extend product life, maintain the original colors of the product, prevent corrosion, keep food from sticking to surfaces and, of course, make cleaning a simple task. Nanomaterials provide improved strength and durability as well as other advantages.
The product also uses far-infrared technology to cook food, thereby helping to release more energy from the cooked ingredients while retaining the food’s original flavor and nutrition.
Taiwan’s other consumer electronics brands include Teco Corp., Sampo Corp. and Kolin Inc.
To promote the island’s industry, the Taiwan government has made the development of branding a key task for raising the competitiveness of Taiwan’s economy. There are two ultimate goals of the Branding Taiwan program. The first is integrating resources to assist the establishment of brands and create a favorable environment for development; the second is to aid Taiwan enterprises in brand development and increase the value of Taiwan’s international brands.
Taiwan companies are among the world’s leaders in offering products that save energy, reduce pollution and help keep people fit. Taiwan has some of the world’s largest companies making green products such as bicycles, energy-saving lights and solar cells to name a few. The Taiwan government is supporting this effort as part of its goal of sustainable development for businesses.
