Pensions: Is Retirement Becoming a Thing of the Past - Live Teleconference

ข่าวเศรษฐกิจ Tuesday June 2, 2009 07:58 —PRESS RELEASE LOCAL

Bangkok--2 Jun--Standard & Poor's Date: Wednesday, June 3, 2009 Time: 10:30 a.m. U.S. Eastern Daylight Time Standard & Poor's will hold a telephone conference call on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. EDT to provide an in-depth view of pension and other postretirement employee benefit (OPEB) plans. Across the U.S., state and local governments as well as corporations are facing mounting pressure to provide retirement benefits for their workers. And while the leading edge of baby boomers (age 63) is set to retire, America's retirement safety is in poor shape. Moreover, Standard & Poor's currently estimates that corporate pension plans are underfunded by about $308 billion-with other postemployment benefits (OPEBs) underfunded by more than $255 billion. The speakers on the call will include David Wyss, Standard & Poor’s Chief Economist, Howard Silverblatt, Standard & Poor’s Senior Index analyst, and Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services credit analysts Jonathan Nus, Robin Prunty, and David Hitchcock. Key topics: - Can corporations and governments sustain their retirement plans and OPEB liabilities? - How are states governing the financial operations of their OPEB plans? Do we need a more consistent approach? - Local governments may chart new courses to address rising pension liabilities, such as the use of pension obligation bonds, and have only recently uncovered their true OPEB costs--will they have the resources to pay these large liabilities? - What is the exposure of U.S. corporate issuers to corporate pension and multi-employer plans? - How will current underfunding affect future shortages? After the speakers complete their presentations, they will be available for a question and answer session. If you have any specific questions that you would like to be addressed on this teleconference, please submit an email to eventsmarketing@standardandpoors.com. All questions should be submitted by Tuesday, June 2, 2009.
