Bangkok--15 Jun--Thanachart
Taking Thai companies on Roadshow to Europe-America with the SET to help stimulate investment in Thailand.
Thanachart Securities Public Company Limited is confident that the global economy will recover within next six to 12 months. Thanachart is cooperating with the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) and BNP Paribas in organising the Global Roadshow “Strength in Global Adversity”, taking nine leading listed corporates to the United States from June 25-26, 2009, and to England from June 29-30, 2009, to reassure foreign investors about the situation in Thailand and to promote investment. Also, Thanachart is confident that the roadshow will help create confidence among foreign institutional investors.
Moreover, these nine listed companies are the leading listed corporates in various sectors such as Energy, Banking, Information & Communication Technology, and Food & Beverages. These are large firms with high growth potential, accounting for more than 40% of total market capitalisation. The companies are: PTT Public Company Limited (PTT); PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP); Banpu Public Company Limited (BANPU); Thai Tap Water Supply Public Company Limited (TTW); Bangkok Bank Public Company Limited (BBL); Advance Info Service Public Company Limited (ADVANC); Thai Union Frozen Products Public Company Limited (TUF); Khon Kaen Sugar Industry Public Company Limited (KSL); and Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI). Mr. Pradit Phataraprasit, Deputy Finance Minister and Mrs. Patreeya Benjapolchai, President of the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), will also be going on the roadshow to promote the potential of Thailand’s stock market.
Ms. Asvini Tailanga, Managing Director of Thanachart Securities Public Company Limited said: “Thanachart sees this year as a very good investment year or even a once in a life-time investment opportunity for the equity market after the crash last year, and therefore it is very good timing to do this roadshow with the SET. Thailand had that opportunity after the Asian crisis 10 years ago when the market went up from the 1998 bottom of 200 points to peak at 900 in 2007. We believe that with the concerted support from the government and central banks around the world, the global economy will see a recovery within the next six to 12 months at the latest. And as the equity market always leads the economy, 2009 is a very good year for investment. We also feel the need for the government, the SET and the private sector to send three key messages to foreign investors about Thailand. First, the political problems have already passed their low point, which was in 2H08, and although some instability will continue, which is not so unusual in a coalition government system, it will no longer completely derail economic policies as in the past. Second, most Thai listed corporates have already proved that they have been able to remain healthy in one of the deepest ever global crises. Third, this crisis is not causing any structural changes to Thailand but only cyclical problems, implying the country’s readiness to enjoy a turnaround.”
Furthermore, Thanachart and BNP Paribas, in cooperation with the SET, have been planning this roadshow since the end of 2008, even though the global situation at that time was not so good. However, Thanachart foresaw the potential of Thai stocks and continually collaborated with the SET while the SET has also trusted Thanachart to be the organiser of this global roadshow as Thanachart and BNP Paribas have the experience and expertise in taking more than 20 leading companies on eight to 10 international roadshows every year. Hence, Thanachart has been able to gain the confidence of both local and foreign institutions.
Ms. Asvini also said that Thanachart, BNP Paribas, and the SET will take nine leading listed companies on a roadshow in mid-June, with the objective of stimulating investment in Thailand because Europe and the United States are very large markets. Hence, this will provide a good opportunity for foreign institutional investors to receive direct information that can truly instil them with confidence.
