Bangkok--17 Jul--Toyota Motor Mr. Kyoichi Tanada, president of Toyota Motor Thailand Ltd., reveals sales statistics for the first semester of 2009. Overall Industry sales results were 231,428 units, a 28.0% decrease compared to the same period last year. He expects the market to slow down into the second semester as well; and is ready to lower the sales target, predicting car sales to be 480,000 for the year. Mr. Kyoichi Tanada stated that, “The first three month’s sales declined appreciably. This was due mainly to the global economic crisis, which negatively impacted Toyota as well as the entire automobile industry in Thailand. Total Industry sales for the first half of 2009 were 231,428 units, which represented a 28% decrease versus the same period last year. This was comprised of 96,056 passenger cars and 135,372 commercial vehicles. Within the commercial vehicle category, 1-ton pickup sales represented 117,696 units.” “During this period, passenger car sales declined at a 13% rate. However, during the same time, the 1-ton pickup market experienced a more significant decline of 35.3%, due chiefly from the negative impact of declining investments in Thailand as well as the drop in prices of our agricultural products.” Unit sales from January — June 2009 Total car market 231,428 units 28.0% decrease Passenger car 96,056 units 13.0% decrease Commercial vehicle 135,372 units 35.9% decrease 1-ton pickup trucks 117,696 units 35.3% decrease “Meanwhile, Toyota sales were 95,334 units for the first six months, down 29.9% versus the same period last year. For the 1-ton category, Toyota Hilux Vigo sales were 48,678 units, with a 41.4% market share, which placed us No. 1 in the segment.” “In addition to our domestic sales results for the first 6 months, Toyota exported 102,179 CBU’s, a 33% decline versus the same period last year. OEM containers of export parts totaled 10,255 containers, with a combined export value of over 65 billion baht, a 24% decline.” Toyota sales for the first 6 months of 2009 Unit quantity 95,334 units 29.9% decrease 41.2% market share Passenger car 41,541 units 23.1% decrease 43.2% market share Commercial vehicle 53,793 units 34.4% decrease 39.7% market share 1-ton pickup (include PPV) 48,678 units 34.7% decrease 41.4% market share 1-ton pickup (exclude PPV) 41,827 units 37.9% decrease 39.5% market share As for the auto market trend in the second semester of 2009, Mr. Tanada said, “We predict the auto industry for 2009 will be 480,000 units, 22% down from last year, and 7.7% down from our original forecast. The passenger car market is estimated to be 202,000, only a 10.9% decrease from last year, and a minimal decline due to relatively strong demand in the small car segment. The commercial vehicles market is estimated at 278,000 units, or a 28.4% decrease. This includes 241,000 1-ton pickups, or about a 27.8% decline from last year. . As you can see, most of the negative growth is predicted to be in the commercial vehicle market, specifically in the 1-ton segment.” Sales estimation for year 2009 Total sales 480,000 units 22% Passenger car 202,000 units 10.9% Commercial car 278,000 units 28.4% As for Toyota’s domestic and export sales targets, Mr. Tanada said, “Our revised annual sales estimate for Toyota will be 205,000 units for the domestic market, a 21.8% decrease from last year with a 42.7% market share. Our export sales of CBU’s is estimated to be 222,000 units for a value of 96.6 Billion Baht, and our OEM and replacement parts export volume should be valued around 40 Billion Baht. The total combined value will be 136.6 billion baht, a decrease of about 25.4% from 2008.” Sales estimation for year 2009 Total sales 205,000 units 21.8% decrease 42.7% market share Passenger car 90,500 units 15.3% decrease 44.8% market share Commercial Vehicle 114,500 units 26.3% decrease 41.2% market share “In addition to sharply focusing on our sales challenges for 2009, Toyota will also continue to place strong emphasis on customer satisfaction and build upon the successes we achieved for the past two consecutive years as being No.1 in the J. D. Power Customer Satisfaction Survey. Moreover, while we intend to closely monitor and control the expenses of our business operations throughout 2009, we will continue to stimulate the market with aggressive marketing programs in an effort to introduce our new products, such as Camry Hybrid and others. We will also maintain our strong stance in promoting CSR and Environmental activities as a good corporate citizen in developing a sustainable society.” “In the same vein, we strongly encourage the government to drive our economy upward by introducing various economic stimulation programs designed to enhance consumer confidence and purchasing power. Obviously, this will require a government that will be intent on supporting the automotive industry—an industry that is vital to the economic well-being of Thailand. This would include their placing emphasis and priority on Hybrid technology in an effort to further stimulate the market. In summary, let me say that the automobile industry in Thailand is alive and well, but in need of nurturing. On a positive note, the current emotion surrounding the rise in fuel prices should abate, and the 1-ton market should rebound as the year continues and as consumer confidence improves,” concludes Mr. Tanada.
