Bangkok--29 Jul--e-Cop
e-Cop’s Global Command Centres observed unusually resilient cyber attacks toward financial institutions in APAC
e-Cop, the leading managed risk and information security services provider reported that its network of Global Command Centres (GCC) has detected what could be a region-wide reconnaissance mission by malicious hackers prior to launching of a full-scale attack towards financial institutions in the region.
e-Cop’s GCC observed an unusually resilient cyber attacks against Asian banks, including those in Singapore and Malaysia. The company has released a security advisory to its customers to inform them that the attack is an attempt to access restricted files in the web-server to steal user accounts and passwords. The recent offensive strikes came from computers in different parts of the world including United States, Russia, Korea, and Germany. These attacks may be related to active hacker groups performing probes to gain information prior to actual penetration of the servers.
“Thai banks and other financial institutions are also at high risk of being targeted by these cyber crooks,” says Mr. Noppakoon Khamklin, General Manager of E-C.O.P. (Thailand) Ltd which operates the company’s Security Operations Centre at the Empire Tower in Bangkok.
“When hackers have breached the networks, they can remotely harvest confidential corporate information and they may even gain administrative access to a company’s server and launch malicious applications and cause more damage.” Added Mr. Noppakoon
A total of seven IP (Internet Protocol) addresses were found to be involved in the highly coordinated cyber assault. e-Cop has advised its customers to block the offending IP addresses to prevent potential threat, and to install and update anti-virus and anti-spyware programs.
These incidents are treated on high alert as they came in the wake of the recent destructive denial-of-service attacks towards the US and South Korean government websites.
e-Cop started its 24x7 Managed Security Surveillance services when there were no other companies doing it in the region and since 2001 the company have been publishing e-Security Index which tracks the trend of cyber attacks in the Asia Pacific region. This intelligence is gathered via its large network of Global Command Centres and its relevance is in the fact that it is focused on the APAC region, whereas most reports in the market are either from US or Europe which does not significantly reflect the real trend in the region.
