Presided over by Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, the inaugural Asian Martial Arts Games’ opening ceremony promises to impress audiences at Indoor Stadium Huamark when it takes place today.
The maiden event’s opening ceremony, which includes performances from renowned singer Yuanyong Opakul or Aed Carabao and famous actress Khemanij ‘Pancake’ Jamikorn, features three sets of performances.
The ceremony begins with a performance, entitled ‘Games of Spirits’, followed by a performance called ‘Land of Smiles’ and then ends with the of ‘Flame of Martial Arts’ performance.
The event also has the honour to welcome Timothy Fok, Vice president of Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), the Games’organising committee, Olympic Committee of Thailand (OCT) and also board committee from Ministry of Tourism and Sports.
The procession of athletes, delegates and officials from some 40 countries will march into the stadium in order of each country's name. The Thai delegation will be the last enter the stadium as Thai flag bearer Bordin Panjabut leads the Thai delegation into the stadium.
The highlight of the ceremony will be when Karate-do exponent Yanisa Torrattanawattana, the last torch bearer, will pass the flame to prominent Thai Martial Arts Film actor Tony Ja or Panom Yeeram, who will light the flame of the Games in the cauldron, which formally declares the opening of the Games.
The Asian meet, which gets underway from August 1-9, 2009, features 9 disciplines of Martial Arts sports consisting of Taekwondo, Kurash, Muay Thai, Jujitsu, Wushu-Kungfu, Pencak Silat and Kick Boxing. A total of 112 gold medals will be up for grabs in the event which will be competed in four venues, Indoor Stadium Huamark, Nimibutr National Stadium, Thai-Japan Youth Welfare Centre, Din Daeng and in Suphan Buri.
