Bangkok--7 Aug--Weber Shandwick Hitachi GST Thailand was named as the winner in the Environmental Management category of the “2009 Prime Minister’s Industry Awards.” First organized by the Thai Ministry of Industry in 1993, the Prime Minister Awards represent the country’s most prestigious recognition in the field of industrial excellence. Hitachi GST was cited for achieving an annual savings of 300,000 cubic meters of water and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1,800 tons per year. The company's general manager Mr. Kazuya Takeda received the award from Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, the Prime Minister. Mr. Nakorn Tangsujaritpun, Hitachi GST Thailand’s Deputy Managing Director, Human Resources and Administration, said, “We are very proud of this achievement. It is a testament to our commitment, dedication and hard work of our management team and all of our employees in the field of environmental management.” To qualify in the Environmental Management category of the Prime Minister Industry Awards, factories must be ISO14001-certified and must demonstrate compliance with all emissions regulations. Scoring is additionally based on the evaluation of the company's performance record in five critical areas: implementation of and employee participation in environmental policy; a working environment and emergency response plan; corporate social responsibility; pollution control and waste management; and pollution prevention and 3R implementation. To compete in any category, a company must show it is an active investor in Thailand and demonstrate that it has not received any complaints from within the local community over the previous three years. The Prime Minister Industry Awards aim to elevate standards and promote factory performance in seven categories: productivity, environmental management, safety management, quality, energy management, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and logistics. Twenty-eight factories participated in the competition this year. Since 1998, Hitachi GST has been actively involved in environmental preservation, including reforestation projects under HM the King’s initiative and organized by the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
