The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET)’s Board of Governors today elected one of its members, Mr. Sompol Kiatphaibool, as its fourteenth Chairman, starting from August 19, 2009 to August 14, 2011.
Mr. Sompol and Ms. Jaruporn Vaiyanant had been appointed to SET’s Board as governors by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on August 15, 2009 to replace Mr. Pakorn Malakul na Ayudhya and Mr. Wichai Poolworaluk, whose terms as governors had ended, SET President Patareeya Benjapolchai said.
“The board expressed its deep appreciation for Mr. Pakorn’s work and dedication. He had valuable achievements the benefited the Thai capital during his chairmanship (August 22, 2007 — August 14, 2009). The board believes that Mr. Sompol’s extensive experience in the commerce, industrial, including the money and capital markets will ensure the smooth growth of the Thai capital market, which is now in a major development phase. The board also thanked Mr. Wichai for his extensive contributions,” said Ms. Patareeya.
Mr. Sompol Kiatphaibool, 69, received his M.S (Economics) from Fairleigh Dickinson University, United States and M.A. (Hons.) (Development Economics) from the National Institute of Development Administration. He was Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Commerce; Chairman, Board of Directors, National Housing Authority; Chairman, Audit Committee, Ministry of Transport; Civil Service Commission, Member, Court of Directors, Bank of Thailand; and Senator and Chairman, Agriculture and Co-Operatives Committee, the Senate.
Currently, his posts are Chairman of the Board, Siam City Bank PCL; Chairman, Audit Committee, Thai Vegetable Oil PCL; Member, Public Sector Development Commission; Chairman, Public Sector Audit and Evaluation Committee, Ministry of Transport; and Member, Advisory Board, The Support Arts and Crafts International Center of Thailand.
Assoc. Prof. Jaruporn Vaiyanant, 63, received her M.A (Economics) from Middle Tennessee State University, United States. Currently, she is a member of the Thai insurance council; Advisor, Faculty of Public Health, Thammasat University and Member, Evaluation Committee, the Anti-Money Laundering Office. Moreover, she has extensive experience in academic and other areas, e.,g., insurance planning, risk management and developing laws for the insurance.
