The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Foundation honored Phra Kru Sophonpattananusit, the abbot of Wat Saphan, with its Prateep Unsongtham Hata award in the urban development category for his dedication in alleviating drug addiction problems in the Klong Toey community of Bangkok.
“SET Foundation bestowed this award for 2009 on Phra Kru Sophonpattananusit for his outstanding contribution to urban development. The award is one of the six categories of the Honoring Great Contributors program supported by SET Foundation, aiming at promoting and supporting those contribute and dedicate their efforts to society,” said SET President and SET Foundation Secretary, Patareeya Benjapolchai.
“Corporations should look after their nearby communities, and SET has always given significance to and supported the Klong Toey neighborhood. SET has supported youth education and developed the community’s quality of life, consistently working with community residents and other organizations. Joining with the Duang Pateep Foundation to recognize and support the work of Phra Kru Sophonpattananusit for his great contribution on urban development will truly help raise the Klong Toey community’s standard of living.
“Phra Kru Sophonpattananusit has promoted Wat Saphan to be Klong Toey community center for solving drugs problems since 1986. He has used his temple as a center to unite communities and organizations against drugs and help those abused to rehabilitate themselves and contribute to society. Phra Kru Sophonpattananusit truly deserves this award. With the support from SET Foundation, projects he’s initiated will benefit the wider community,” said Ms. Patareeya.
“The Klong Toey community is a major drug problem area. Phra Kru Sophonpattannusit has used family institution, temple, community and school as a major pillar to solve the drugs problems. He also worked with the public and private organizations to strengthen the community and be the immune system for students, together with helping recover those drug abused. Phra Kru Sophonpattananusit has saved more than 1,000 lives to get back on track and be good persons to their parents and society. He has never given up to any obstacle or become discouraged. His work is truly admirable, said Ms. Prateep Ungsongtham Hata, Duang Preteep Foundation’s secretary-general.
The Duang Prateep Foundation, with award selection committee members from the Foundation, a SET representative, a Duang Prateep Foundation representative, and an outside member, considering the awardee’s achievements that help change society over at least three to five years, and the creative approach to problem-solving. The project must not be associated with or benefit any political parties. Additionally, the activities must create community consciousness and strengthen the community.
