Bangkok’s 11th International Festival of Dance & Music, the premier cultural event of the year, will kick off on September 7, 2009 with a lavish and spectacular staging of La Traviata.
Performed by over 150 musicians and singers from one of Russia’s most respected opera houses, the Ekaterinburg Opera Theatre, La Traviata is one of Verdi’s most loved operas. Based on Alexandre Dumas’ play, La Dame aux Cameilas, this 3-act opera is a romantic tale set in 18th Century Paris and tells the story of Alfredo, a young poet from a well-known family, who falls in love with a courtesan named Violetta. The story deals with social distinctions, and stresses that a good heart is more important than propriety.
With a talented leading cast consisting of soprano Natalia Starkova, a gold medalist at the International Bellini Vocalists’ Competition, playing “Violetta”, and Dymtry Kuzmin, a soloist with the National Opera of Ukraine, playing “Alfredo”, La Traviata will be under the baton of one of the most respected conductors today, Mikhail Granovsky, from the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow.
