The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) confirms that despite today’s (September 2) delay, its trading system meets international standards of efficiency and is ready to continually support securities trading. SET also has a backup system in case there are problems with the main system to allow continual trading activities. The problems of today were in the order transmission systems of one vendor utilized by the brokerages affected, and those problems have been corrected.
In preparing for the entire system’s readiness to trade the new listing of Southern Steel PCL, whose trading symbol was “2S,” SET checked with its member companies in advance and asked for the readiness of each brokerage. Each member firm, and their vendors, confirmed that they were ready.
However, during the pre-opening session, SET confronted problems from the order transmission systems of 16 member companies, all of whom used the same vendor for their systems. SET therefore postponed its pre-opening and opening sessions by one hour to prevent any impact that might affect SET’s overall system. After SET confirmed that all trading systems were back to normal at 11.00 hours, the order transmission systems of every member company were allowed to operate normally.
The problems which arose were because the system of the vendor in question could not handle trading symbols that began with a number, such as “2S”. Thus, the Association of Securities Companies suggested that Southern Steel PCL should change its trading symbol to start with an alphabet character, as was the case with all other listings. The company has agreed to change its symbol to “S2,” and this change will be implemented starting September 3, 2009.
