“I was born on the stage and I will die on one for sure,” says Lady Gaga.
Lady Gaga has risen to global fame with the biggest debut album of the year, dazzling fans with her infectious melodies, eccentric outfits and larger-than-life on-and-off-stage persona. TALK ASIA travels to Macau where CNN’s Kristie Lu Stout goes backstage at the megastar’s ‘Summer Disco Party’ where the 23-year old New Yorker discusses her musical inspirations, fashion style and reputation for being outspoken.
Dressed in a Vivienne Westwood knit sweater, a platinum blond bob wig and a pair of high-heeled Gallianos, Lady Gaga explains how her debut album “Just Dance” - which she also wrote and co-produced — dominated the pop charts worldwide, and sold 2.3 million copies around the world propelling her to superstardom: “I think I seem to have struck the nerve…I think that my music, as well as my performance offers a sense of escapism and I think that especially in America…there’s been a real need for someone to tell a story.”
Lady Gaga also refutes comments that her music lacks longevity: “I just must remain prolific and relevant, as equally irrelevant, and continue to make great music. Longevity has a lot to do with discipline and ambition, which are two things that are certainly in my blood.” When describing herself she says she’s “a pop musical misfit” and explains: “If all the pop singers were at a high school party together, then I would be at the ‘not-cool-kids’ table.”
The 23-year old singer is known for pouring every penny she earns into her concerts: “It’s just a personal choice that I don’t like to buy diamond watches and range rovers or expensive houses. I just like to spend money on the show. I’d much rather have the biggest show on earth than the best house.” But does she think that pop culture has gotten too commercial: “Not if I’m around,” replies Gaga.
She addresses how people compare her with Madonna: “It’s cool. Madonna. Wouldn’t you want to be compared to Madonna than any other female pop singer? She’s the one.” But Gaga says that she does not follow in the pop diva’s footsteps: “I have my own roadmap. She is certainly the most admirable. Her career has continued to be relevant over years and years and years. But I will slowly begin to separate myself. It’s been a very brief amount of time that people have known who I am. It’s only natural that they’ll compare me to someone.”
With her outrageous outfits and controversial candor, Lady Gaga’s life is under the media’s watchful eye and she shares with Lu Stout how she lives her life under their heavy scrutiny: “What my creative friends have always reminded me of is they say only value the opinion of those that you respect. And anyone that you don’t respect, pay no mind to their opinion about you or anyone else. And that’s how I live my life. If I worry about everything that everyone said, I would not be a good artist.”
Lady Gaga’s interview with TALK ASIA will be available online at www.cnn.com/talkasia after the first airing.
