Synopsis: The most obscure sphere of a country’s national security is cyber defense. What is defined as an act of cyber war? Who is behind them? criminals, hack-tivists, terrorists, or even rogue nation states? it is very complicated to determine. Until you know who is behind the incident, you do not know if it is a criminal activity, a military attack, or a terrorist action.
The nature of these acts of cyber aggression requires a high degree of international cooperation. The inherent nature of cyber space and the asymmetric advantage that it provides to adversaries makes cyber warfare a more attractive option today to so many state and non-state actors than real warfare. Unlike conventional warfare, by its very nature, a cyber war is a coordinated effort across the globe and carried out with relative ease and at a ridiculously low cost.
Take for example the cyberattacks on Georgia in 2008. The first wave of attacks was carried our by botnets. These consisted of relatively unsophisticated denial-of-service ad Web site defacement attacks but executed in a very sophisticated manner. More recently, popular social networking sites: facebook and twitter were targets of web attacks, which were reported to be a casualty of cyber war between Russian and Georgian sympathizers, causing what was reported in the media as the great twitter crash of 2009.
Denial-of-service attacks are a reality of the information age. Each and every day we move closer to a cyber event that would bring about a response that could trigger cyber war. Given nations’ and corporations’ reliance on computer systems and networks, the threat posted by acts of cyber aggression are significant and the stakes are high.
Cyber warfare is a global chess game with citizens, governments, and corporations are the pawns. In the past the enemies come by land, sea, and air with their tanks, jets, and submarines; now then come via the high speed broadband.
So how do we respond to this challenge? What are the measures we can put in place to prevent cyber attacks? Taking the initiative as a leading information security services provider, e-Cop is now working with ISPs to roll out DDoS prevention measures by filtering out potentially malicious requests from legitimates ones.
