UN to highlight Asia-Pacific efforts to combat climate change at talks in Bangkok

Bangkok--25 Sep--UN Briefing scheduled for 1 p.m. on 29 September at UN Conference Centre ESCAP Hall United Nations agencies will highlight their various efforts in the Asia-Pacific region to assist countries in combating climate change as negotiations for a new global deal are set to open next week in Bangkok. The briefing will be moderated by Noeleen Heyzer, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and feature welcoming remarks by Yvo de Boer, the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In addition to ESCAP, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will participate on the briefing panel. The presentations are expected to focus on the UN’s work in the region on such climate change issues as mitigation, adaptation, financing, capacity building and policy integration. The programme also contains an open forum as well as a poster display highlighting the key activities, outcomes and messages of some 20 UN organizations taking part in the climate change event.
