Bangkok--2 Oct--Image Impact Shanghai Ballet is making its first ever appearance in Thailand on October 4 and 6, 2009 during Bangkok’s 11th International Festival of Dance & Music at the Thailand Cultural Centre. Recognized as a strong regional dance company, Shanghai Ballet is respected for upholding a classical ballet discipline. Their repertoire includes updated versions of classic favorites, along with a growing number of works which combine a traditional Chinese element, such as A Sigh of Love and The Butterfly Lovers. The company will perform Romeo and Juliet, a classical ballet choreographed by Derek Deane, OBE and former Artistic Director of the English National Ballet, on October 4th, and August Bournonville’s version of La Sylphide, choreographed by Jean Paul Gravier, a recipient of the National Order of Arts and Letters award from France, and former Director of Ballet National du Rhin, on October 6th. In a review of this Romeo and Juliet production, London’s Financial Times declared: “This may be the most theatrically detailed, daring and amatory of Romeo and Juliet ballets”. While Romeo and Juliet is regarded as one of the world’s most moving love stories, La Sylphide is a romantic ballet based on a fairy tale by Charles Nodier, which also relates of unappeased and tragic love for the ethereal Sylphide.
