Rainy season always bring added stress to motorists whenever they are on the road in the rain — a driving condition that requires increased concentration because, in addition to poor driving vision, the rainwater that mixes with oil slick and dirt on the road surface make the surface much more slippery. Many may have also experienced a nervous time when they have to drive along flooded roads, feeling worried if their car is going to make it to their destination. It is therefore necessary to ensure that the engine and battery of your car are in good and reliable condition, in order not to suffer a car breakdown on your way.
Mr. Prakasit Phornprapha, Director of Siam GS Battery Co., Ltd. and Siam GS Sales Co., Ltd., the manufacturer and distributor of GS Battery for automobiles, gives his advice about driving on flooded roads: “In road conditions where the floodwater is below six inches above the road surface, simply drive slowly to prevent the water from entering the engine compartment and gearbox, which may cause short circuit and engine failure or spoil the gear oil. In case the floodwater reaches the underside of the chassis, drive at the lowest speed possible while keeping an eye on the car in front of you in order to avoid unseen pits. After driving in flooded condition, restore braking efficiency of your car by pressing the gas and brake pedals alternately to chase away water from the brake pads and discs.”
“One main cause of engine failure while driving in flooded condition is the damp or water that enters the engine compartment. Regular basic check of the ignition system is therefore recommended, which involves only a few simple steps. Firstly, make sure wiring of the ignition coil is positioned as high above the ground as possible, then check rubber covers of the wire, distributor, and spark plugs, replace them if they are deformed or in bad condition, and finish off the procedures by spraying dampness dispeller on these spots,” Mr. Prakasit continues.
In addition, the alternator and battery also needs regular check. Always keep the terminal connections clean and free of the white lead sulfate powder, but if accumulation is found, pour hot water to soften the deposit, then remove it with abrasive paper or wire brush and apply grease on the connections. Make sure the hole on each battery cap does not get clogged. The alternator wiring must be in good condition to ensure normal flow of electric charge. For added confidence, replace the standard 35 — 45-ampere battery with a 50 — 65-ampere battery to prevent power drop while driving on rainy or flooded roads.
For maximum performance of your car and worry-free driving, have your car checked in a car service center on regular basis because some parts and components of your car need inspection and replacement in due course, such as engine oil, brake oil, and battery’s distilled water level.
