Thailand Tigers celebrates inaugural game with free entrance for all fans
Thailand’s ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) team - the Thailand Tigers - is taking on Indonesia’s Satria Muda BritAma this Sunday at Nimibutri National Stadium in what is set to be a display of top level basketball by players of both sides. An added attraction for fans this Sunday, 18 October is that admission to see the match which starts at 4pm at Nimibutri National Stadium is completely free.
Sunday’s debut outing for the Thai home team is expected to draw a large crowd eager to see what the Tigers have to offer in a game that’s played in 213 countries and is the second largest sport in the world.
The ASEAN Basketball League is initially made up of teams from Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Brunei. The first series of matches in the league will run from now until February 2010.
A collaboration between Tony Fernandes, entrepreneur and founder of Air Asia, Indonesian media organisation E-Live Entertainment and the South East Asian Basketball Association (SEABA), the newly formed ABL aims to create a new sports property in South East Asia that will merge high performance sports action with family entertainment to engage audiences from teenagers to young families.
SEABA itself is sanctioned by FIBA Asia which is part of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the world governing body for basketball, and an independent association formed by 213 National federations of basketball throughout the world.
Although it mirrors the structure of the established Euroleague, the ABL has its own set of rules in terms of its roster make up and salary caps. Teams are permitted two imports of non-ASEAN citizenship, three ASEAN imports and seven local players. Teams are however, allowed to field all local players if they so wish.
Wim Reijnen (Entertainment Asia) long time basketball fan and co-owner of the Tigers said, “Not only will Sunday’s match provide first class entertainment, the wealth of talent on both sides means a display of top class professional basketball. We expect this sporting event to create real excitement among Thai sports fans in general who will now have their own basketball team to support.”
