Soy consumption provides proven heart health benefits, with research showing promise related to other benefit areas.
During a symposium at the International Congress of Nutrition today, Solae, LLC, the world’s leader in developing soy-based technologies and ingredients, along with scientific leaders further confirmed the importance of soy protein in the daily diet and discussed the development of a new plant-based omega-3 for food products.
“The symposium today reinforces the reality that soy is a high-quality, complete protein similar to that of milk, eggs and meat,” said Priscilla Samuel, PhD, director of nutrition sciences, scientific & regulatory affairs - Solae. “Soy protein and plant-based omega-3s also serve as a sustainable alternative to other proteins and omega-3s.”
Numerous studies show that soy consumption may be associated with a lower incidence of certain chronic diseases, notably heart disease. These findings have led to the United States (U.S.) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorization for a soy heart health claim in 1999. Currently, 11 countries, including Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia and the U.S. have established cholesterol-lowering and/or heart health claims for soy protein. Emerging research also shows that soy consumption may help with weight management and satiety, thus offering opportunities to help reduce the risk of obesity.
Dr. Mark Messina, a professor at the California-based Loma Linda University and co-owner of Nutrition Matters, Inc., refers to soy as an ancient food with modern benefits.
“The Chinese word for soy, ‘ta-tou,’ translates as ‘greater bean,’ which makes a lot of sense when you consider the potential role that soy foods play in prevention and risk reduction of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and breast cancer,” said Messina. “While soy has been consumed for centuries in Asia, it is only within the past two decades that the low incidence of cancer and heart disease in parts of Asia that has helped fuel scientific interest in this legume.”
In 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) partnered with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations University (UNU) to release new requirements for consumption of protein and amino acids.
“The implications of these new protein and amino acid requirements is that protein quality will be important to meeting dietary requirements in both developed and developing countries,” said Dr. Anura Kurpad, dean of the St. Johns Research Institute and a professor of physiology at the St. Johns Medical Center in Bangalore, India.
Dr. Michael James, chief medical scientist in the rheumatology unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and a professor in the department of medicine at the University of Adelaide, spoke about exciting new research on omega-3 fatty acids and discussed the development of a new plant-based (soybean) source of the omega-3 fatty acid, stearidonic acid (SDA), by Monsanto Company (NYSE: MON) and Solae, for use in food.
“Consumers are not getting optimal amounts of omega-3 into their daily diets. The development of a soybean enriched in omega-3 SDA can help address this problem,” said James. “Emerging evidence shows that SDA is more efficiently converted to EPA than ALA, thus more efficiently increasing the omega-3 index, a new biomarker of heart health.”
In summarizing the panel discussion at ICN 2009, Samuel said “when considering the many benefits of soy consumption, it is clear that the nutrition community would welcome the incorporation of soy foods into the diet for people around the world.”
“Communities in Asia have incorporated soy foods into their diet for thousands of years,” said Samuel. “It is encouraging for us to have the scientific community continue to study the health
benefits of soy. The more research that becomes available about soy, the more we believe consumers will adopt soy as an important part of their daily diet.”
