Co-authors Sir Richard Jolly and Dr. Louis Emmerij to discuss book on ‘UN Ideas that Changed the World’

Bangkok--24 Nov--UNISBKK Authors Sir Richard Jolly and Dr. Louis Emmerij will deliver a lecture on their book “UN Ideas that Changed the World,” the capstone volume of a decade-long project to take stock of the origins and evolution of the economic and social activities of the United Nations. The event — part of the Distinguished Persons Lecture series at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) — will be hosted by Noeleen Heyzer, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP. It will be followed by an open discussion as well as remarks by Ambassador Manaspas Xuto, President of the United Nations Association of Thailand (UNAT). Sir Richard and Dr. Emmerij are Senior Research Fellows at The Graduate Center of The City University of New York (CUNY) and the co-directors of the United Nations Intellectual History Project, an initiative that began in mid-1999 and has been focusing on the United Nations as the creator and nurturer of ideas and concepts that have permeated international public policy discourse and sometimes won support and been implemented. “UN Ideas that Changed the World” is the tenth and final volume in the series. Sir Richard is a special adviser to the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and architect of the widely-acclaimed Human Development Report. He served for 14 years as Deputy Executive Director for Programmes in UNICEF, where he was directly involved in efforts to ensure more attention to the needs of children and women in the making of economic adjustment policies, along the lines set out in the book he co-edited, “Adjustment with a Human Face.” Dr. Emmerij has published more than 130 articles on the economics of education, labour market questions, economic and social policy, and development studies. He has held, among others, the positions of Special Advisor to the President of the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington D.C. from 1993 until 1999; President of the OECD Development Center from 1986 until 1992; and was the Rector of the Institute of Social Studies at The Hague and Professor of Development Economics from 1976 to 1985. The Distinguished Persons Lecture is one of the activities taking place during the first session of ESCAP’s Committee on Macroeconomic Policy, Poverty Reduction and Inclusive Development, to be held from 24 to 26 November at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok.
