Bangkok--30 Nov--Conrad Bangkok TWILIGHT CONCERT CHIANGRAI YOUTH ORCHESTRA Presented by VILLA DARAKORN and The CHIANGRAI VIOLIN CLUB Saturday, 19 December 2009 at 5.00 pm The Location Enjoy the unique experience of an outdoor concert in the beautiful arboretum at Villa Darakorn near Khunkorn Waterfall. An area of 11 rais boasts a fine collection of over 300 tropical and exotic plant species from all over the world. You will enjoy the atmosphere of tranquility, cool breezes, and the musical sounds of nature, with the singing of birds and the sound of running water in a creek in front of the Villa. You are cordially invited to a pre-concert guided tour of the arboretum at 3:30 pm. and a post-concert buffet dinner at 6:30 pm. Twenty minutes from Chiangrai city center, Villa Darakorn is located at 2 Moo 11 (Baan Pang Or), Tambon Mae Korn, Amphoe Muang, approximately 7 km. after the Khunkorn Waterfall junction (16.5 km. from Chiangrai) and 4 km. before the forest park entrance. The Concert Under the baton of Mr. Paramet Lertkasem, the Chiangrai Youth Orchestra (CYO) will delight the audience with a varied selection of music by Vivaldi, Bach and J. Strauss in addition to popular songs, Thai classical music, Northern Lanna songs and Christmas songs arranged for string orchestra. It is a great honour for the CYO to welcome renowned British artist, Richard Harvey as guest recorder soloist for this occasion. Concert program Water Music (Handel), Air on G (Bach), Concerto in G maj. (Vivaldi), Concerto Grosso for two violins (Vivaldi), The Swan (Saint-Sa?ns), Serenade (Toselli), Blue Danube ( J. Strauss), Scheindler’s List, Yesterday(The Beatles), “Mae Nam” from film score of “King Naresuan”, Love in Spring (H.M. The King’s composition), Thai traditional music (arranged for string orchestra), Thai classical and Lanna Music, Christmas songs, Radesky March, and more. Program Outline 3:30 p.m. Guided tour around the Villa Darakorn arboretum (free of charge) 5:00 p.m. Concert performance 6:30 p.m. Buffet dinner The Performers Solo performances by young members of CYO and guest musicians from Bangkok, as well as renowned British composer and musician (recorder soloist) appearing in this concert as guest soloist. Well-known London artist Richard Harvey graduated from London’s Royal Academy of Music and is highly regarded as a composer and conductor. He has scored countless British TV series, documentaries and films as well as Hollywood’s “Death of a President.” He also contributed to Da Vinci Code, King Naresuan and Suriyothai. His skills continue to be called upon for both live performances and feature films including Lion King and Harry Potter. His classical albums include a Guitar concerto “Concerto Antico” which he composed for John Williams, recorder concertos and more. He was co-founder of the Conrad Young Musicians Competition. In addition, he is an exceptional virtuoso performer on 700 instruments from around the world; blown, plucked, keyboard, beaten and programmed. Richard now lives in Surrey and enjoys wintering in Thailand where he pursues his love for world travel and adding to his massive collection of musical instruments from around the world. This will be his first visit to Chiangrai and he will play solo recorder for a Vivaldi Concerto and “Mae Nam” from the score for King Naresuan. Violinist Natnicha Yolsiriwat is a 16-year-old concertmaster of the CYO. In 2009 She received a music scholarship for 2 months of violin lessons in Belgium where she worked with Belgian violinist, Geertje Podevyn. In this programme, Nattanicha will play violin solo for Scheindler’s List. Violinist Tharathep Chaiwanichkul is 9 years old and has been with the CYO since 2007. In 2008 he received a music scholarship for 2 months of violin lessons with Geertje Podevyn in Belgium. In this programme he will be a second violin soloist in a Concerto Grosso for two violins by Vivaldi. Violinist Arisa (Netty) Sosotikul Ho is a 10-year-old Thai-Taiwanese violinist who is currently based in Taiwan. She has been first prize winners of several competitions in Taiwan. This November she obtained second prize in the Taiwan Taipei City Government Violin Competition for the category of not more than 12 years old. Netty passed grade 8 (violin) of Associate Board of Royal School of Music. In this programme, Netty will be the first violin soloist for a Concerto Grosso by Vivaldi. Cellist, Wishwin (Willy) Sureeratanakorn is 16 years old. He received a music scholarship to Shrewsbury International School. He is a principal cellist of the Shrewsbury Symphony Orchestra and of the Thai Youth Orchestra (TYO). Willy passed grade 8 with merit from the Associated Board of Royal School of Music for both cello and piano. In this programme, Willy will play cello solo for "The Swan". Violinist, Chot (Sun) Buasuwan is 15 years old. Sun received an award of Trinity Music Award London (Thailand). While he is studying in New Zealand, he obtained 1st prize for intermediate level of Instrumental Youth Competition (2008). He is now studying at New Zealand’s the Palmerston North Boys High School where he is a member of Manawatu Youth Orchestra and Manawatu Sinfonia. In this programme, Sun will play solo for Thai classical piece, Kamen Sai Yok, (arranged for violin and string orchestra). History of Villa Darakorn Villa Darakorn as well as its arboretum were built 20 years ago (1989) by Khun Sawet Piamphongsant, a former Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance in the era of Prime Minister M.R. Seni Pramoj. Khun Sawet was an enthusiastic gardenlover, who, during his life time, collected flowering plants and exotic plant species from all over the world. The wide range of exotic plants grown in this arboretum include Rhododendrons, Maple, Avocado, Magnolia and giant fern (Angiopteris Angustifolia). In winter time, a variety of plants are in blossom. Visitors have always been impressed by their beautiful flowers so far. Khun Sawet built also another arboretum, at Baan Pae, Rayong - “The Sobha Arboretum” - which has been open to the public since its beginning in 1979. How to go to Villa Darakorn The quickest route from Chiangrai city center, drive along Highway No.1 (Chiangrai — Payao) to Wat Rong Khun, turn right at the junction and drive to Tambon Mae Korn, then turn left and proceed along the rural road Den Ha - Baan Dong Mada to Khun Korn Waterfall junction (after Km.16). Turn right there and drive 7 km. further to Baan Pang Or, where Villa Darakorn is located. A total distance of 33 km. (20 -25 min.). Khun Korn Waterfall Forest Park is 11 km. from the junction. The alternative route is as follows: Drive along the rural road Den Ha - Baan Dong Mada, which leads to Amphoe Mae Suay and Chiangmai, for 16.5 km. to Khun Korn Waterfall junction. Then turn right into the Khun Korn Waterfall road and proceed to Baan Pang Or/ Villa Darakorn (exactly 7 km.). A total distance of 23.5 km. (25 min.)
