Slightly windier conditions of nearly 10 knots and overcast skies greeted the fleet at the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta on race day three. Today’s race day sponsor is Chang Beer.
The racing class fleet saw Neil Pryde finish first for the third straight day overall with a first and second in today’s races. Despite Pryde’s impressive start to the Regatta, Full Metal Jacket, skippered by Chris Mead has caught the attention of competitors and race observers alike, switching first and second place positions with Pryde in two races today. Following the leaders in third place for both races was Ray Roberts in Evolution Racing.
Chris Meads has gathered a strong crew made of mostly Kiwis from current Team New Zealand, as well as former and current America’s Cup sailors lead by retired Chris Dickson, a three time world match racing champion and America’s Cup sailor.
Said Dickson, “I was very happy with our performance today. In the first race we got in there early and got our elbows out bullying our way into position which set us up for a great start. If we start behind the bigger 50-footers we would easily lose about one minute.”
In the IRC Class 1, Ichi Ban’s domination with first place finishes across the board underscored Matt Allen’s tactical prowess in the shifty conditions at the Regatta. In race five Switchblade finished in second and Koull Baby in third. Race six saw Koull Baby claim second and Tantrum pull into second. Overall series results show Ichi Ban clearly in front with Koull Baby second and Katsu third.
In the Premier Class, Shahtoosh finished first, followed by Anthony Hastings in second and Australian Maid rounding out the top three. Hasting and Baby Tonga — Hideaway Club holds on to first place heading into the last two days of racing.
Twin Sharks crossed the finish a little over one minute ahead of Voodoo Child in the first race for the Firefly 850 Class today, ahead of Voodoo Child and SEA Property. In the second race of the day SEA Property took the bullet ahead of Moto Inzi and Twin Sharks.
Flirting with perfection with six first places so far, Henry Kaye’s Thor looks to be in a class of its own. Thailand’s Radab Kanjanavanit came in second and Miss Saigon third in today’s Multihull Racing Class.
One of the top events in the yachting world, the Phuket King's Cup Regatta is now in its 23rd year and continues to set its mark both as a magnificent maritime event and an annual attraction for up to 2,000 high spending visitors.
Asia's biggest and most popular regatta, the event was inaugurated in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the King of Thailand and has been held every year since, during the first week of December.
Under Royal Patronage, the Regatta is organised by the Phuket King's Cup Regatta Organizing Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket.
Sponsors of the 2009 Regatta include Kata Group Resorts Thailand, Chang Beer, Mont Clair, Mom Tri's Boathouse, The Moorings and Haad Thip. Media Partners include Asia Pacific Boating, Blue Wave 90.5FM, Ensign Media, Multihull World, The Nation, Phuket Gazette, Prestige Thailand, Sail-World.com, Superyacht Asia magazine and Yacht Style.
