Bangkok--8 Dec--Aziam Burson Marsteller Technology for Life is a collaborative effort led by Qualcomm’s Wireless Reach initiative with the Princess Mother’s Medical Volunteer (PMMV) Foundation, CAT Telecom Public Company Limited, Huawei Technology Company Limited and the Ministry of Public Health. The project involves providing 3G technology to 51 rural clinics and hospitals in nine provinces in Northern, Northeastern and Southern regions of Thailand within the Princess Mother’s Medical Volunteer Foundation’s network. Through the use of the advanced 3G technology provided to the provincial healthcare facilities, patients now have the ability to communicate with doctors in major cities through a broadband Internet connection using a computer and webcam as these doctors assist in diagnosing and providing consultation on various medical conditions. Additionally, officers in rural clinics can now send reports and updates regularly through the Internet to provincial public health offices, major hospitals and the Ministry of Public Health. Kaneungjit Suriyathumrongkul, Country Manager and Senior Director, Qualcomm Thailand accepted the award on behalf of Qualcomm. Qualcomm is honored to have received this award for our Technology for Life project in rural Thailand. The initial results of the project demonstrate the potential of 3G technology for improving the quality of life of Thai people by increasing access to healthcare. Over the last year, approximately 5,200 people were treated using various wireless devices and video conferencing systems, while some 4,300 patients were able to access clinics through mobile phones to consult with a physician, obtain a referral, or access treatment information. The wireless network and devices have also been used to coordinate with village public health volunteers to facilitate emergency response actions. Around the world, the Qualcomm Wireless Reach initiative has 37 projects that utilize 3G to create new ways for people to communicate, learn, access health care, sustain the environment and reach global markets.
