Here in Bangkok, Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit is proud to be one of the venues around the world to host a The Arts Theatre - Commedia dell'Arte performance. The engaging show will be held in the hotel’s Grande Ballroom on 25th February. Theatre lovers can expect an original play that incorporates elements of Thai likay, Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" and Goldoni's "Servant of Two Masters," all performed according to the style and traditions of Commedia dell'Arte.
Commedia dell'Arte began in Italy in the early 16th century and quickly spread throughout Europe. Its emergence during the Renaissance marked the beginning of professional theatre in the West with comic characters, themes, and devices employed by early Commedia troupes influencing artists from Shakespeare, Moliere, and Goldoni to The Blues Brothers, American musical theatre, and contemporary sit-coms. Today, it continues to live in theatres around the world and acting training programs recognize the value of the physical discipline, spontaneous creativity, and collaborative spirit inherent in Commedia's methods.
The Bangkok show will be performed by Jonathan Samson and a troupe of professional actors and comedians. Known for his work on the Thai comedy circuit and local television, Jonathan has also worked with numerous Commedia dell'Arte troupes, including "The Village Zanies," "Teatro Commedia - Boston," and the critically acclaimed "i Sebastiani."
The show will tell the story of a wealthy traveler, Antonio, and his servant, Arlecchino who are robbed on the way to the city of Bengcoq and must enter into the service of a rich old miser named Pantalone. Antonio falls in love with Isabella, Pantalone's daughter, but must contend with Silvio, the son of a local doctor for her affections…
