Welcoming 2010, the overall motorcycle market rose in January, reflecting an economic rebound. Honda has maintained its leadership for 21 years in a row, releasing latest models with PGM-FI technology.
Compared to the same period of last year, the sales increased by 139%; and 153,312 units were sold. Honda, market leader, sold 110,731 units and grabbed 72 per cent of market share. The sales of Automatic Transmission (AT) model hiked to 57 per cent of the overall market, or 40,443 units were sold. ‘Honda Scoopy i’ remained the most popular model in the market, followed by ‘Honda Click i’, while ‘Honda PCX’ was also listed in the top 10. Such a positive response has confirmed the recognition of the PGM-FI technology that took 54 per cent of market share.
“The positive economic wrap-up in last year’s quarter paved a promising rebound for local economy. The overall market continues to shine,” said Teerapat Chivaphong, sales director of AP Honda. With an overall sales of 153,312 units, the overall motorcycle market rose by 104 per cent from the previous month. Compared to the same period of the previous year, the sales also rose by 139 per cent.
Honda alone sold 110,731 units, which was a 72 per cent market share. The sales by Honda rose by 158 per cent, compared to the same period of the previous year. Among the sales by Honda, the Automatic Transmission (AT) has grown drastically, with 40,443 units or 57 per cent of market share, breaking the sales record of any AT category available in the market. ‘Honda Scoopy i’, ‘Honda Click i’ and ‘Honda PCX’ are among the TOP 10 list in January. That reflects the positive response to the PGM-FI technology that has gained 54 per cent of market share in the past month. “To move forward to the third decade of being the market leader, Honda prepares to launch new models equipped with PGM-FI technology and high performance that will not only help save the fuel but also be environmentally friendly.”
There were 153,312 units of motorcycles sold in January 2010; which were 75,930 units of family type, or 50 per cent; 70,365 units of AT type, or 46 per cent; 3,820 units of family/sports type, or 2 per cent; 1,236 units of sports, or 1 per cent; and 1,961 units of off-road and other types, or 1 per cent.
There were 83,111 units equipped with PGM-FI technology registered in January, or 54 per cent. The figure rose by 112 per cent from the previous month. As of today, there are 81,760 units of vehicles equipped with PGM-FI technology contributed by Honda.
Divided by the manufacturers, there were 110,731 units sold by Honda, or 72 per cent, (a 112-per-cent rise from the previous month); 34,570 units by Yamaha, or 23 per cent (a 85-per-cent decrease in growth); 4,803 units by Suzuki, or 3 per cent (a 99-per-cent decrease in growth); 1,798 units by Kawasaki, or 1 per cent; 44 units by Platinum; 35 units by JRD; 222 units of Tiger; and 1,109 units by others.
