Bangkok--19 Feb--The Pikture Gallery The Pikture Gallery is proud to announce the opening of our second floor and thrilled to share with you our new workshop spaces as well as an arts library and an art studio under the “artist @ work” project. The ARTIST @ WORK project was created in 2009 to give a platform for amateur artists. This is to give them time, space and opportunity to explore what's in their hearts, mind and soul. In the space of 2 - 3 months, the artist will create a series of work under one concept from start to finish and at the end, an exhibition will be held at the ARTIST@WORK studio. Our current artist in residence is Miss Daniela Yohannes. Originally from Eritrea but living in London, this British artist brings us Africana aesthetics with a contemporary concept — definitely something not to miss. This studio is open to public visits and can be viewed from the 16th of February, between the hours of 10am to 7pm — or log on to http://artistatworkbkk.blogspot.com to follow a day-to-day account of Daniela’s progress. On the 26th of March, we will hold an exhibition celebrating the completion of her residency and to showcase the work. For this event, be sure to receive an official invitation from us nearer to the date. For more information please contact The Pikture Gallery [email protected] or call +66 2 662 8359, alternatively please visits www.thepikturegallery.com Daniela Yohannes (b.1982) is a British illustrator whose work combines contemporary Western culture and techniques with African visual aesthetics. Eritrean in her heritage, Yohannes was born in Italy and spent her childhood in Naples until the age of 8, before relocating with her family to North London. She has resided there since, completing a degree in Illustration in 2004. Yohannes’ work references a wide variety of exotic stimulus, a vibrant world of people, languages and locations, space, time and jazz music. Using a mixture of craft tools and technology, she draws these together through the strong yet abstract themes they share. Her contemporary approach to form and technique combines specifically with her interests in Africana to form a distinct visual language. Allusions to Voodoo, clans and tribes, body paint and masks are all referenced and transformed through manipulated portraits, bold polygons of digital colour and the fine details of pen strokes.
