General Motors Company has named Martin Apfel President of GM South East Asia Operations, GM Thailand and Chevrolet Sales Thailand, effective immediately. Apfel will oversee GM’s business in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) markets.
Apfel, who most recently served as GM’s Executive Director of Global Manufacturing Strategy and Planning, replaces Steve Carlisle. Carlisle has been appointed Vice President, U.S. Sales Operations.
“Today’s announcement is recognition of the growing importance of GM’s global operations,” said Tim Lee, President of GM International Operations. “Steve Carlisle has done an outstanding job putting our ASEAN operations on a solid footing for continued growth. He will be greatly missed.
“Taking his place is a highly respected member of GM’s leadership team. Martin Apfel brings a wealth of experience in production and management to his new position. He will keep up the momentum for GM in the key emerging markets of ASEAN.”
Martin Apfel, who is a German national began his GM career with the company’s Adam Opel unit. He has held several key positions in Europe, including Director of Opel’s Bochum plants, President of Opel Eisenach (the model for GM’s plant in Rayong, Thailand), and President of the Board and Managing Director of Opel Portugal. As Executive Director of Global Manufacturing Strategy and Planning, he had responsibilities for GM’s manufacturing operations around the world and represented Manufacturing in GM’s global product planning and development.
