Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is delighted to welcome the arrival of summer with the traditional Thai delicacy Khao Chae (Chilled rice in jasmine-scented water with condiments), now being served during lunch at Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok’s Thai restaurant Sala Rim Naam from 16 March to 30 April 2010.
Khaow Chae has its origins in the legends of the people of Mon, who created this special dish as a gift for the gods during Songkran. Under King Chulalongkorn’s rule Khao Chae flavoured with jasmine-scented water became a favourite in the palace, and in 1910 the Thai delicacy was enjoyed throughout the country.
Come and stay cool with this Thai specialty at Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, specially prepared and selected by Thai celebrity Chef Vichit Makura. Enjoy the delicious sweetness of the jasmine scented water on the palette, coupled by the sharp flavours of fried sweet peppers, deep-fried battered salted eggs, stuffed shallots, fried shrimp paste, sweet fish, salty beef and pickled vegetables and fruits, including cucumbers and mangos.
