Bangkok--July 23--Bumrungrad Hospital
A team of heart specialists and surgeons from the Heart Center at Bumrungrad Hospital has returned from a successful mission to Myanmar where the team treated some thirteen cardiac patients while working with a number of Myanmar physicians.
In a unique collaboration with the Myanmar Defense Services General Hospital, the Bumrungrad cardiac surgeons performed several open heart cases including valve replacements and the invasive cardiology team performed many cases of complex balloon angioplasty. The cases were done over a four day period in July at the Defense Services General Hospital where the team also shared hands-on experience for the Myanmar physician team.
“It is very gratifying that the Thai expertise in advanced medical procedures has developed to the extent that we can offer assistance to our neighbors in the region,” commented Dr. Visuit Vivephakirat, Bumrungrad’s US-trained Director of Cardiology. “Our Burmese physician colleagues were eager to absorb the new techniques that we had to offer.”
Dr. Pattanasak Lerpradit, Bumrungrad’s UK-trained cardiac surgeon, added, “The support provided by the hospital and medical personnel allowed us to treat the patients as a team. The real beneficiaries of the visit were of course the patients.” The team also included Dr. Graeme Bennett who serves as a cardiac surgeon with the Chulalongkorn Faculty of Medicine.
Myanmar patients seeking advanced medical care have traditionally pursued options in the US, UK or in Singapore. “We are seeing a shift in the hub of medical care in the Indochinese Region to Bangkok,” commented Mr. Curtis Schroeder, Bumrungrad’s American CEO. “And with the recent currency crisis, Thai healthcare now represents an incredible value when compared to either Europe or Singapore.”
Bumrungrad will continue to expand its relationship with Myanmar. Patients will also come to Bumrungrad for a variety of other tertiary services such as cancer care at Bumrungrad’s Horizon Regional Cancer Center. Similar partnerships are underway with medical entities in Bangladesh, Vietnam, Nepal and other locations in the region.
Bumrungrad Hospital Bangkok is a full service medical facility offering international standard medical care with 554 beds, outpatient clinics for 3,000 patients per day and a staff of over 600 highly qualified physicians. Bumrungrad Hospital is owned by the Bumrungrad Hospital Public Company Ltd., a public company listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, which also owns Bumrungrad Hospital, Rayong as well as a number of other healthcare related businesses.
