Bangkok--4 May--SET
The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) held a seminar, “Teaching merchants to become rich”, so that capital market organizations and firms would operate in line with Buddhism and with social responsibility. This program was taught by a renowned monk, Phramaha Vudhijaya Vajiramedhi (V. Vajiramedhi), to celebrate SET’s 35th anniversary.
Phramaha Vudhijaya Vajiramedhi said, “Business and religion are compatible, as investors have to do so prudently, wisely and with self-discipline, all of which are Buddhist practices. In the same time, business is a part of society, so firms have to operate with corporate governance and give back to society. Having a sense of giving and sharing to society will benefit our society as a whole.” He also gave three concepts: 1) change yourself from a merchant — a man with a lot of money -- to a rich man who shares and promotes the public interest, 2) use your money to do good deeds, and 3) do good things so that the world will remember you in a good way.
In addition, Phramaha Vudhijaya Vajiramedhi said about current political situation that Thais must act to save our nation. Although those in the silent majority do not stand out in public, they monitor and keep up with the news. He recommended Thais act and think prudently, with no prejudice, seeking for information from all angles, and think first about the public interest and seek solutions.
SET President Patareeya Benjapolchai, and Mr. Montree Sornpaisarn, CEO of Kim Eng Securities (Thailand) PCL joined in the question and answer session. “The Exchange and dharma are closely related. Investors should consider information and assess risk before deciding, and earn, save, invest, and spend prudently,” Ms. Patareeya. She continued, “SET itself has been continually sharing with society, especially by giving youth an education in personal financial management that will help build a strong foundation for our country.”
Mr. Montree added, “Buddhism and Christianity are similar in terms of love and sharing, which will bring great value and meaning to your life, with or without money.”
