Report shows significant accomplishments in long term goals for sustainable business practices
FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, released its 2009 Citizenship Report to review the progress it has made over the past year to achieving its commitments in sustainable business for customers, shareowners and communities around the world.
"FedEx is not just distinguished by our ability to move goods and information around the world fast and reliably, but also by our commitment for pursuing a sustainable business,” said David L. Cunningham Jr., president, FedEx Express, Asia Pacific. “We have long practiced practical environmentalism globally as well as regionally, using innovation, collaboration and leadership to create environmental benefits to our business goals.”
The report is the second of its kind from the company which issued its inaugural report in 2008. Highlights of the 2009 review include:
- An 8.33 percent reduction to-date against the 2005 baseline for aircraft emissions, advancing toward the goal of a 20 percent intensity decrease by 2020.
- A 14.1 percent improvement in vehicle fuel efficiency since 2005, surpassing the halfway milestone for increasing ground fleet efficiency 20 percent by 2020.
- Exceeding the fiscal year 2008 goal of procuring 25,000 MWh of renewable energy credits while continuing to install solar electric systems, with a current capacity of 3.92 MW.
- Completing the process of tracking facilities’ emissions.
- Maintaining charitable giving levels despite difficult business conditions, giving 1.5 percent of our pre-tax profits.
- Implementing a method to simplify organizing volunteer programs and to track volunteer efforts, which helped identify that during the 2009 FedEx Cares Week alone, team members in 38 countries volunteered more than 20,000 hours.

About FedEx Sustainability
FedEx is committed to connecting the world responsibly and resourcefully. We have set long-term goals to reduce aircraft emissions 20 percent by 2020, increase FedEx Express vehicle efficiency by 20 percent by 2020, and expand on-site renewable energy generation and procurement of renewable energy credits. FedEx works to achieve these ambitious goals through operating in an increasingly sustainable way and engaging our team members, customers, business partners, and the circle of influencer communities to help us reduce the environmental impact of our daily business operations.
In the Asia Pacific region, fleet and vehicle enhancements contribute to FedEx goal of reducing emissions in its global operations. Since January, FedEx introduced its new Boeing 777 Freighters to directly connect Shanghai and Hong Kong markets to its Superhub in Memphis, Tennessee. The aircraft uses 18% less fuel than the MD-11 aircraft which is a workhorse of the FedEx fleet in the region.
FedEx introduce two diesel-electric hybrid trucks to its fleet in Hong Kong. These new hybrid trucks offer an average 72% advantage in fuel efficiency, and can effectively reduce carbon emission by an average of 30 percent compared to diesel vehicles commonly used in the ground fleet[1]. This latest effort adds to the fleet of six hybrid trucks and eight Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks FedEx operates in Japan.
FedEx has been recognized for its sustainability commitment through inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index—a global list of the world’s largest, most sustainable organizations—and ranks #93 in Newsweek’s 2009 Top 500 Greenest Companies.
