After the winter cup in April, the AFR Championship brought its first point race of the season back at Zhuhai International Circuit (ZIC) on May 22nd -23rd, 2010.
The qualifying session started at 14:20 on 22nd May, 2010. After the rain in the morning, the track was still half wet when the session started. All the Formula Renault cars were on slick tires. Sandy Nicholas Stuvik, the 15 year-old Thai-Norwegian racing driver sponsored by The Pizza Company and Dacon Inspection Services qualified 2nd while Shan Qi Zhang took pole position.
Round 1 started in the afternoon at 17:20 with Shan Qi Zhang and Sandy standing side by side on the front row. As the race started, the pole sitter led the fleet into Turn1. Stuvik followed Zhang without trying anything to risky as the track condition was slipper and tricky and there was another round to go the coming day. Most drivers chose a rather conservative approach just to maintain their positions and leave more options for round 2. In the end, Sandy secured 2nd while Zhang was the first one to finish the race.
Round 2
Race 2 on Sunday 23rd of May turned out to be a nail biter, as rain just started while the Formula Renault cars were on the grid waiting for the race start. However all cars took the start with slick tires and Sandy got off to a very good start and took the lead. Coming out of turn 1 the cars found standing water and Sandy just managed to not loose his car, but fell down to second place. The same water, saw 2 other cars spin out of the race, with yet another car going straight off in Turn 9, thus causing a safety car period. Once the restart the top 3 were Cong Li, Sandy and Qi Zhang, Sandy was tapped from behind and spun his car in turn 12 and only got restarted after the whole field had gone past. He then started a wild chase and overtook two cars, while more and more cars went off the very wet track. In the end Cong Li took the victory, with Sandy securing second place.
Sandy now leads the 2010 AFR Championship with 48 points, in front of Suriya Bala with 40 and Samin Gomes with 32 points. The next race will be at Chengdu International Circuit in China on June 26th -27th , 2010.
