Bangkok--9 Aug--The Way Communication
Big C Supercenter (PCL) and The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Thailand jointly organized the CSR campaign ‘Big C Big Forest- Stop Global Warming’. The campaign has been established Big C to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen of Thailand’s 78th Birthday Anniversary on the coming August, 12th 2010. The objective is to follow her footsteps on sustainable environment initiatives by planting over 70,000 trees in Thailand’s natural forest reserve - Kaeng Krachan National Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan province (North-South Yangnumglad Reforestation Development Project for Ecotourism)
Vice Minister for Natural Resources and Environment of Thailand, Mr. Pimuk Simaroj stated that ‘We are happy to be part of this important campaign to encourage the people to be aware of the decline in forestation and join hands in protecting forest. As well as to increase forest areas and flight against global warming. The planting activity is also being held during the auspicious 78th Birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. This campaign coincides with the Ministry initiatives to promote all Thais to plant trees on auspicious occasions.’
Ms. Jariya Jirathiwat Vice President, Marketing and Communications said: ‘To celebrate Big C Supercenter 17th Anniversary, we have launched the project ‘Big C Big Forest- Stop Global warming’ with the aims to preserve forests for future generations and promote public awareness of the importance of trees by planting over 170,000 trees. We launched the campaign, with the support of the Department of Forestry, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and our collaborators Unilever, Saha Pathanapibul ,P&G, and Nestl? (Thai) by giving away more than 35,000 tress sapling to our customers in our 68 locations nationwide. Also In August, 6th 2010, over 100 Big C employees will plant the first 35,000 trees at Kaeng Krachan National Park to celebrate Birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and will continue the project until the 170,000 trees are planted.
Ms. Jariya further said that this campaign should be seen as a highlight to the critical role of forests and trees and raise public awareness of global warming. Thailand in particular has experienced rapid deforestation over the past, reducing its forest cover significantly, thereby rendering desertification and other effects of deforestation very serious issues which must be tackled with urgency. The tree planting campaign by Big C therefore is an opportunity aiming to promote the restoration of the natural ecology of the country and encourage everyone in the society to get involved.
