SCG Paper has invested Baht 2,200 millions in upgrading the Khon Kaen - based Phoenix Pulp & Paper plant’s utilities production and environmental management efficiency to international standard.
As a major part of the plan, the company will open full opportunity for communities to participate in public hearing to ensure transparency and openness according to SCG Paper’s commitment to ensure world-class environmental friendly production process and participation and consent from stakeholders for sustainable development.
Mr. Terasak Chamikorn, Managing Director of Phoenix Pulp & Paper Plc. (PPPC) in SCG Paper, said that as a leader in Thailand’s paper industry, SCG Paper has been strongly committed to sustainable development. The company has been using the most advanced and environmentally friendly technology for the benefits of surrounding communities and society at large. The company has also initiated new projects beyond legal requirements which are industry standard. High standard of environmental management and various innovations have been adopted to drive sustainable economic, social and environment development.
With such commitment, the company has continued to develop and enhance its production and utility system to ensure that the highest standard is always met. With high standard, production efficiency is achieved, resulting in better occupational health for employees and quality of life for community as well as environment protection. The company plan to invite public, surrounding communities and all stakeholders to share their opinions, analyze the information, make recommendations and together set related standards. Information, comments and recommendations from the public hearing will be compiled and presented in the complete Environment and Health Impact Assessment (EHIA) to be submitted to concerned government agencies in the future.
The new Baht 2,200 millions investments will include two projects as follows :
1. Efficiency upgrade for producing utilities from biomass
2. Efficiency upgrade for environmental management
The efficiency upgrade for producing utilities from biomass
1. Investment value: Baht 1,400 millions
2. Replace old machinery in the production unit with new one to enable the company to better control environment standard that meets the international standard. The company will install the Recovery Boiler which has a capacity to produce 108 tons per hour of steam and the installation of one unit of steam turbine and power generator with 9.62 megawatt capacity. All biomass used in this production unit will be from waste in the pulp production process. The technology is from Finland and Japan.
3. Benefits:
- Increase efficiency in controlling air pollution to the better level than legally required. Smell from old machinery will be eliminated.
- Better control air quality emitted from the production process
- Reduce smell from pulp production process for longer period
- Reduce energy dependent and lower the government’s burden in utility and power business investment
The efficiency upgrade for environmental management
1. Investment value: Baht 800 millions
2. Production process upgrade for better environmental management efficiency: new Oxygen plant replacement, installation of Double Oxygen Delignification (ODL), Non Condensable Gas (NCG), installation of Gasifier for Lime Kiln and new Lime Kiln unit.
3. Benefits:
- Reducing smell from pulp production process for a long period
- Reducing waste from pulp production process and eliminate landfill
- Increase efficiency and quality of waste water control
- Increase air quality emitted from pulp production process
- Increase efficiency in dust control
The company has already communicated to employees and families, public, community and stakeholders to ensure good understanding about the project. Since July, all stakeholders have been informed and invited to participate in the public hearing in order to jointly set the framework and share comments on the project. The company hoped that both projects will be successful and provide maximum benefits to all stakeholders, especially communities and people directly and indirectly involved in the project while enabling communities and business to live happily together.
