ASEAN, with the support of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP), will convene a Post-Nargis Lessons Learning Conference on Monday, 30 August 2010, in Bangkok.
The Conference, with the theme of “Institutionalising Good Practices, Strengthening Partnership“, aims to incorporate the good practices of ASEAN’s post-Nargis experience in Myanmar into regional disaster management mechanisms and to strengthen regional partnerships in disaster management based on the experience learnt.
The Conference will be held from 9:00 to 11:45 am in Conference Room 3 of the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok and will include remarks by the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr Surin Pitsuwan, and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Executive Secretary of ESCAP, Dr Noeleen Heyzer, and will be attended by senior representatives from the ASEAN member states , the United Nations, dialogue partners, countries that provided assistance to the post-Nargis efforts,
non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders.
During the conference, ASEAN will also release a six-volume publication assessing its experience in carrying out its first ever large scale humanitarian operation in the region.
Journalists are invited to attend the last segment of the Conference, including a photo opportunity of the publication release ceremony at approximately 11:00 am and closing remarks by the principals.
The Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr Surin Pitsuwan, and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCAP, Dr Noeleen Heyzer, will brief members of the press following the Conference from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Theatre of the United Nations Conference Centre, Rajdamnern Nok Avenue, Bangkok.
