Bangkok--10 Sep--The Delegation of the European Union to Thailand
Thailand's first ASEM Student Summit takes place on Monday 13th September at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The event brings together 24 Thai students of different backgrounds from universities across the country. They will debate sustainable development which is on the agenda also at the 8th ASEM Summit in Brussels on 4-5 October.
At this interactive event students will represent 24 out of 48 ASEM countries and present and defend the positions of those countries. They will also engage in a debate to find solutions to how Asian and European countries can best support each other on sustainable economic, social and environmental development — just like the Heads of State and Government of ASEM countries at the real Summit. A jury drawn from diplomacy, academia and media will choose three winners who will be awarded a trip to Brussels to visit the Belgian Foreign Ministry, the Thai mission to the EU as well as EU institutions.
"We are delighted to offer Thai students the opportunity to engage in a simulation experience of the ASEM8 Summit. We hope that it increases their understanding of this important process which brings together 48 Asian and European countries that jointly represent half of the world’s GDP, almost 60% of the world’s population and 60% of global trade.", said the Foreign Minister of Thailand H.E. Kasit Piromya, Ambassador of Belgium H.E. Rudi Veestraeten and Ambassador of the EU H.E. David Lipman in a joint statement.
The ASEM Student Simulation Summit is organised jointly by the Belgian Embassy, Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Delegation of the European Union. The objective is to introduce Thai university students to the ASEM process which is a key forum for dialogue between Asia and Europe.
Representatives of the media are welcome to attend the Student Summit. Programme and instructions are attached.
