During a recent visit to Thailand, Tim Lee, General Motors International Operations’ President met with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva at the Government House, sharing GM’s mission and vision for growth in the Kingdom, including plans to increase market share in Thailand and the Southeast Asian region.
Mr. Lee, who also engaged in several meetings with key government officials, employees and dealers, said GM is looking forward to increasing its market share in Thailand and improving its position with the automotive industry worldwide. He is confident this can be achieved due to the improving global economy.
He also explored possibilities of governmental support and incentives for E85 vehicles with engine capacities of below 1.8L. Current incentives by the Thai government is only given to E85 vehicles with engines larger than 1.8L.
Mr. Lee reasoned that it is vital to continue with efforts to reduce consumption of petroleum-based products and conserve the environment. GM is designing and creating vehicles with E20 and E85 capabilities, in addition to launching the world’s first fully electric powered vehicle, the Chevrolet VOLT. Other innovative developments by GM towards reducing dependency on petroleum-based products include the EN-V and PUMA.
The GMIO President also reaffirmed its commitment to Thailand and the Southeast Asian region. “General Motors will be investing more in our business in Thailand in order to increase the productivity of its plant in Rayong. We will aggressively boost our market share and hire significantly more people, doubling our employment to 4,000 in the near future and appointing more local talents in senior management positions,” Mr. Lee said.
The company is also heavily investing in other Southeast Asian markets, in which the automotive sector have shown significant growth. In Thailand alone, the company is expected to spend approximately USD 600 million on manufacturing its Chevrolet vehicles.
