The ‘Arts for The Planet’ award presentation held today at the Amari Watergate Bangkok was distinguished both by the high level of interest the project has attracted and the obvious artistic and creative ability of the winning contestants.
Launched in April this year by ONYX Hospitality Group in co-operation with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Department of Education to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on 22 April 2010, the ‘Arts for The Planet’ painting competition provides a total of 12 scholarships worth Baht 40,000 to students in primary and secondary schools in the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration system.
The prizes and awards presented at today’s ceremony comprise Primary Schools (P1 — P6 for students aged 7-12 years and Secondary Schools (M1 — M3 for students 12-15 years. For an outstanding painting, a cash scholarship of Baht 5,000 plus a certificate, an accommodation voucher for one night’s stay at an Amari property an honorary plaque for the school went to the Primary Schools winner Todsaporn Phanmalee, Wat Buakaew school, Klongsamwa district office and to the Secondary Schools winner Visakha Ruansorn, Wat Krathumseapla school, Praveth district office.
For five selected paintings, a cash scholarship of Baht 3,000 plus a certificate for each student was presented to each of the five Primary Schools winners and to each of the five Secondary Schools winners.
Peter Henley, President and Chief Executive Officer, ONYX Hospitality Group said, “We are thrilled to have seen the impressively high standard of the entries for this competition and the degree of creativity of the winners in particular. The project aims to raise awareness and engage the younger generation through arts to foster critical thinking about the world we live in and the key environmental issues. It is also part of the ONYX Hospitality Group’s ‘Baht for a Better Life’ project to support education of underprivileged children in Thailand. Many of the paintings will also be available for sale at an exhibition open to the public and which runs from the 10th to 30th September at Mezzanine, Amari Watergate Bangkok; and all proceeds will be channeled to the “Baht for a Better Life project’”.
Lisa Thomas, CSR Director of the ONYX Hospitality Group explained that the ‘‘Arts for The Planet’’ project was conceived as part of the group’s wide-ranging CSR programme in Thailand. “It works on many levels. It increases enivronmental awareness among all those involved and acts as a spur to the student’s creative talents,” she said.
Masvimol Rakbankerd, Deputy Director, Department of Education, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said, “The students benefit greatly from this project. Not only are they able to display their artistic creativity, they can also incorporate their knowledge of environmental conservation into their paintings.”
A selection of paintings from the competition exhibition will be open for public viewing from 10th September till the end of the month at Mezzanine, Amari Watergate Bangkok.
