The work is now shown as video installation on the 9th floor gallery of the BACC, but to do it live at the BACC, the artist said he wanted it as a present for the Bangkok art centre. Although it has been open since 2008, but “now it feels right to do it” Chumpon said.
Chumpon Apisuk, a Thai artist who is known for his performance art work, has worked internationally for over 20 years. He is also founder and director of Asiatopia Performance Art Festival, which has been regarded as one of the Asia’s most important destinations for performance art community around the world. “Standing” is an audience participation piece, with the artist standing holding an umbrella protecting an empty arm chair. The gesture is an invitation to people who wants to be part of the moment. However the artist wants people to feel free in their own interpretation of the piece, but the most important thing is “the memory of being together in the space I created and what the space means to participants”.
