Environmental-friendly paper pulp tube developed by SCG Paper won the second prize in the Green Design category of the Design Innovation Contest 2010 held by the National Innovation Agency. Developed based on world-class, patent-pending innovation, SCG Paper’s eco-friendly pulp tube demonstrates high functional properties and environmental-friendly features as well as well-proven commercial potential.
Mr.Taweewat Tripattharanan, Senior Researcher — Product & Technology Development Center, SCG Paper, revealed that “SCG Paper’s eco-friendly paper pulp tube had been developed using highly innovative approach to offer outstanding functionality and environmental friendliness. The tube is made from recycled paper pulp and disposal from waste water treatment plants, which are bio-degradable and prove to be good substitute for plastic and other materials. The tube can be easily produced in various shapes and forms to suit different plant shoots. Moreover, bonding agent and additive are added to make the tube better keep moist, resulting in stronger roots, as well as prevent the roots to overgrow and penetrate outside the tube. This helps substantially reduce the death rate of plant shoot. The product is truly unique and innovative and currently in patent application process with the Department of Intellectual Property.”
The eco-friendly paper pulp tube is part of SCG’s innovation initiative which is key in developing high value added products and services. From environmental protection perspective, the product helps reduce plastic consumption for at least 200,000 kilograms annually and decrease the cost in disposal of residue in landfill for at least 750,000 baht annually. The product also achieves better functional properties when compared to plastic, such as higher survival rate of plant, better moisture retention, lower consumption of soil and fertilizer, less frequent watering required, as well as helps keep the root healthier, make the shoot grow taller and better survive while moving to other places. These make the eco-friendly pulp tube a commercially viable product capable of competing on price and quality with plastic.
The Design Innovation Contest, now in its third year, is conducted annually by the National Innovation Agency with aim to promote an innovative culture in order to develop more innovative designs for business purposes. The competition is one concrete tool to encourage designers or product owners to develop more innovative designs and to promote creative industries with selection criteria based on degree of design, business strategy, marketing strategy and management process.
