Huawei CEO: We can Withstand New Round of US Attacks this Year Bangkok--24 Jan--Huawei Thailand Huawei Founder and Chief Executive Mr. Ren Zhengfei expressed confidence that the company can overcome new challenges the US government may throw at it in the future. "With the experience we gained and lessons we learned last year, we are confident that we will be able to withstand their attacks this year," the CEO told world business leaders and politicians at the recent World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland. Speaking on a panel entitled "A Future Shaped by a Technology Arms Race," Mr. Ren announced that being added to the US Entity List last year did not have much impact on the firm's business and thanks to the US restrictions, the company has built a better and stronger team. The CEO predicted that the US government may look for new ways to put an end to its leadership in 5G technology but the company is well-prepared for any campaign against it. "This year, the US may step up its attacks on us. But I feel the impact would not be very significant," Mr. Ren told attendees in Davos. Knowing from the very beginning that it is not safe to enter an industry whose long-time champion is the United States, Mr. Ren revealed that, 20 years ago, the company invested all of its money in research and development to make sure there's always a Plan B. "We spent hundreds of billions of yuan making preparations, and as a result, we survived the first round of US attacks last year," said the 75-year-old founder. Huawei's 18-percent revenue growth in 2019 showed that the tech firm did not just survive the attacks, it continued to thrive under undesirable circumstances. Huawei is the global leader in 5G business and is the only company in the world that makes 5G handsets, base stations, optical fiber, and core network hardware and software. The company is also the No. 1 patent-holder for 5G technology, holding 20 percent of all 5G patents. The chief executive also revealed that, despite the ban, the company is a big fan of the American ways of business management. A key reason for Huawei's success today, Mr. Ren said, is that the firm learned most of its management practices from US firms. "US companies have contributed to our development," the founder said, adding that "The US should be proud." The CEO maintained that technological development is good and not to be feared. "The US should worry less about our position and growth in the world," Mr. Ren said. For in the end, he believed that billions of people around the world will benefit from the abundance of technological advancement.
