SYDNEY, July 28 1997 /MediaNet International-AsiaNet/ -- Australian-based high technology firm AWA Plessey has signed an agreement to supply digital radio links to Radio Communications of the Philippines Inc (RCPI), a subsidiary of Bayan Telecoms Holdings Corporation. AWA Plessey will supply and commission LongReach Digital Microwave Radios and auxiliary equipment worth US $14.6 million for installation throughout the Philippines. This project will extend long range voice and data telecommunications in remote, rural and unhospitable areas. The deal will greatly strengthen RCPI's existing network, providing a total of 93 new radio links across the country and building spur routes out from RPCI's backbone microwave link. By the end of September, AWA Plessey will have delivered more than half of the equipment specified in the contract. "AWA Plessey is pleased to contribute to the rapid expansion of digital communications in the Philippines and is hopeful that this new technology will facilitate progress in the country," said John Vas, AWA Plessey's Chief Executive, who joined Area Sales Manager Andrew Khoo in the Philippines for the contract signing. Ideal for use in harsh and remote environments, the radios are designed for 'set and forget' installation and unattended operation. According to John Vaz, this minimises the need for routine maintenance and provides significant operation savings. AWA Plessey, headquartered in Sydney, Australia, designs, integrates, installs and commissions system solutions for the telecommunications, aerospace and land traffic management markets, primarily in the Asia-Pacific region.
