MELBOURNE: Vic., 17th Dec/AAP-MediaNet International/AsiaNet/--National Australia Bank Limited today announced the formation of a Global Wholesale Banking Unit. The division will be headed by Mr Michael Soden in the new position of Group General Manager, Global Wholesale banking activities for the National Bank Group in Europe. The Managing Director of National Australia Bank, Mr Don Argus, said the Group's objective was to develop world-class capabilities in treasury, capital markets, specialised finance and corporate banking. "Our corporate customers are one of the Group's key customer segments. They are becoming more global in their operations and their outlook and we are upgrading our wholesale banking services accordingly. "We have already begun establishing our global wholesale bank, with the formation of wholesale banking units in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. This has included the appointment and recruitment of key personnel. This process will continue under the leadership of Michael Soden, "Mr Argus said. Mr Soden joined the Group in late 1994 in Europe. He was formerly the CEO of Security Pacific Hoare Govett in London, following senior appointments within Citibank in New York, Toronto and London. Mr Argus said the new division would offer a broader range of solutions to Corporate customers, which would help to create stronger and more diversified revenue streams. Mr Soden, who will take up his new appointment in Melbourne on 20 January 1997, said the Global Wholesale Bank would operate with a truly global perspective. "Our business will be managed by those with the best expertise, regardless of whether they are in the USA, Europe, Asia or Australia. This approach is imperative in a global market," Mr Soden said. National Australia Bank is a diversified banking and financial services group, with operations in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the United States and Asia. It has total assets of A$173.7 billion (at September 30, 1996) and was ranked in June 1996 as the world's 38th largest bank by shareholders' equity. National Australia Bank reported a 6.8% increase in Group net operating profit to A$2.1 billion in the year to September 30, 1996 - a reacord for any publicly listed company in Australia. Appointments that have been made at this time include General Managers of Wholesale Banking in: Australia - Mr Peter Thomas who assumed his position as head of Australian whoelsale financial services in JUne 1996 joined the bank in January 1994 following a career of over 30 years in international banking in London, Hong Kong and the USA. Europe - Mr Jim Bradley, formerly European Treasurer for the National in London. Mr Bradley joined the Bank in 1995 from Banque Bruxelles Lambert where he was the UK Treasurer. Asia - Mr Jeff Mitchell, currently head of the Australian Financial Services Treasury in Melbourne, will move to Hong Kong in March 1997 to develop the Asian wholesale banking business for the Group. Mr Mitchell joined the Bank in 1992 from Dresdner Australia. Line of business General Managers have also been appointed in the key areas. Mr Mike Aynsley will head the Global Markets division of the Global Wholesale Bank which will focus on the areas of Treasury and Capital Markets. He was previously General manager of the Group Treasury division in Melbourne. Mr John Foley will head Global Capital Markets activities. He joined the Group in London earlier this year from Hill Samuel, where he was a Managing Director in charge of Treasury and Capital Markets. Mr Ian Mattiske will head the Global Project and Structured Finance area, as well as leading the Capital markets area in Australia. He joined the National in 1993 from Chase Australia, where he headed the Investment Banking Group. Mr John Richards, who joined the National earlier this year to head the Treasury activities for the USA, will head the Group's Global Foreign Exchange business. Prior to joining the National, Mr Richards was head of Foreign Exchange in North America for Bank of America.
