Bangkok--30 Sep--USCRI Aj. Ann, Chatchanit Musigchai Mahaguna, the Goodwill Ambassador for Refugees of USCRI Thialand (soon to be named TCR) was invited to speak at the weekly lunch assembly of the Rotary Club, Bangrak recently. She gave current information on refugee situation around the world and at the camps in Thailand. Along the Thai-Myanmar border, we retain 140,000 refugees in 9 camps in 4 provinces, Mae Hongsorn, Tak, Ratchaburi, and Kanchanaburi. Some of these refugees have been stuck in the camps for all their lives. It’s a dilemma for them and they are becoming stateless people. Thailand can not naturalize them and the third country are very selective in who they will take. 50% of the population is children. To them, Thailand is like a safe haven. They ran away from misuse of military forces, minority discrimination, violence, and political unease in Burma. They came to Thailand to seek peace and security. Yet, their dreams are shattered once they are put in restricted camps and are not allowed to work or go to school. To add insult to an injury, they sometimes face dreadful situations like abuses, diseases, lack of life meaning. As a Goodwill Ambassador for Refugees, Ann is begging the Thai government to at least stop and take a look at them and try to find out the best way to help them. Nobody wants to be kept like merchandises in storage. Everybody wants to live a normal life, work for a living, send kids to school. And how would these people do that when they are still confined in these human warehouses.
