SCG Paper, a leading integrated paper solution provider in Thailand and ASEAN, extends its ‘Real Friend to Thai Agriculture’ initiative with the introduction of four new eucalyptus clones that can be grown in diverse geographical conditions across the country and are resistant to disease and insects pest damage. In promoting eucalyptus as a major economic crop and a sustainable source of income for Thai farmers, an extensive network plant distribution center, with over 50 branches nationwide, has been build together with the utilization of cluster management to enhance profitability.
Mr. Joompot Tanmanee, Managing Director, The Siam Forestry Co., Ltd. in SCG Paper said that “we have initiated ‘Real Friend to Thai Agriculture’ policy since 2008 by promoting eucalyptus farming as an alternative of economic crop and a sustainable source of income as well as a way to optimize agricultural land use since it can be grown on the bund around rice field, on arid land as well as the areas with extensive rainfall.”
“The impact of global warming on the agricultural sector is becoming more and more severe during the recent years as seen through the flood crisis in 2011 and unusual drought early this year. Moreover, the inappropriate land use by planting unsuitable crops and the life cycle of insect pest damage, especially gall wasp, that has evolved have brought about problems that are becoming more difficult to handle and have strong impact on the income of Thai farmers. To help alleviate the sufferings faced by Thai agricultural sector, we have developed four new eucalyptus hybrids that are more robust and can generate higher crop yields. The four clones, the results of diversification concept in development with three years of breeding and five years of planting trials, are H8, H10, H12 and H14.”
The major strength of the four new eucalyptus clones, able to grow in diversified geographic locations across Thailand, is as follows:
- H8 - resistant to disease and insect pest damage, suitable for area with high rainfall
- H10 - resistant to disease and insect pest damage, suitable for area with coarse loamy soil and normal rainfall
- H12 - resistant to disease and insect pest damage, suitable for area with calcareous soil and slight to normal rainfall
- H14 - resistant to disease and insect pest damage, suitable for lowland with slight to normal rainfall
