Bangkok--7 Dec--TQPR FOREIGN CORRESPONDENTS’ CLUB OF THAILAND (FCCT) and ONASIA PHOTO AGENCY TO ANNOUNCE WINNERS OF FOURTH-ANNUAL PHOTOJOURNALISM CONTESTand PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION Every year, the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand and OnAsia, the region’s leading stock photography and assignment agency, spotlight the best in photography from across Asia in the annual FCCT/OnAsia Photojournalism Contest. This year’s contest was the biggest ever. Judges reviewed more than 7,000 images from more than 350 photographers across the region, including Thailand, India, Indonesia, Mongolia, the Philippines, and a host of countries in between. The shots chronicled the countless human dramas that made 2010 an incredible year, from Thailand’s political unrest to the ongoing war in Afghanistan to the daily struggles — and victories — of people working and living across Asia and the Pacific. The submissions were a testament to the dedication and creativity of photojournalists in Asia, including many who have endured harsh conditions in conflict zones or disaster areas. Winners will be announced at a special Friday evening cocktail reception on Friday, Dec. 3 (7 p.m.), at the FCCT Clubhouse on the Penthouse Floor of Maneeya Center in central Bangkok. Many of the city’s top photographers and journalists will be on hand to celebrate the event, and guests will be given a special-edition copy of FCCT’s Dateline Magazine — with reproductions of all the winning photos — on a first-come, first-served basis. The reception will be followed by a two-month exhibition of the photos — open to the public — at the FCCT in December and January. Judges selected winners in four categories: Spot news, feature photography, human rights (a special category sponsored by the European Union), and photo essay. In addition, the judges chose one Photographer of the Year — the contest’s top prize — for the strongest body of work from a single photographer. The prizes — which include $2000 for the winner of the EU’s Human Rights category and an additional $1000 for winners in other categories, along with vouchers for the region’s most luxurious hotels and air travel across Asia — come courtesy of FCCT’s generous sponsors. They include the contest’s principal sponsor, Pfizer (Thailand) Ltd.; Star Alliance, the global airline network whose members include Thai Airways and other carriers; The European Union; the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok; the Amari Emerald Cove resort in Koh Chang; the InterContinental Bangkok and the Holiday Inn Bangkok; TQPR public relations; and Bloom Pro Lab & Studio. This year’s awards are also made possible by the acclaimed regional journalists who served as judges for the contest: Dominic Faulder - a British journalist based in Bangkok since the early 1980s who has contributed to range of news organizations and served as a longtime board member of the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand. His past assignments included work as a special correspondent for the regional newsweekly Asiaweek, reporting mainly on Myanmar (Burma) and Cambodia. Yumi Goto - an independent art and documentary photography curator, editor, and consultant who focuses on work with artists who live and work in areas affected by conflict, natural disasters, human rights abuses and women’s issues. Her recent projects have included work as curator of the exhibition for the International Orange Photo Festival in Changhsa, Hunan, China, and curator of the exhibition of the Aleppo International Photo festival in Syria. Damir Sagolj - a Bangkok-based award-winning photographer who is the senior Reuters staff photographer covering Asia — and anywhere else where news is breaking. He spent ten years covering the Middle East including the Iran/Iraq conflict along with the more recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. His work has been widely published and exhibited, including at the prestigious photo-journalism festival Visa pour L’image in Perpignan. Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind event!
