Horti ASIA 2012: the marketplace for Thai exotic fruit growers

ข่าวทั่วไป Tuesday December 21, 2010 12:16 —PRESS RELEASE LOCAL

Bangkok--21 Dec--SPOTMARK Horti Asia 2012 will be the marketplace for Thai fruit growers to explore new export markets and find technology to improve quality, productivity, and competitiveness. Thai fruit is already exported to several countries. Exotic Thai fruits already sell in China, Japan, India, Taiwan, and European countries such as Britain and Germany and the US. According to statistics from the Office of Agricultural Economics, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, in 2009, Thailand exported 239,828 tons of longan worth USD120.6 mn. While the total export of rambutan was 5,347 tons or USD2.3 mn.; lychee 16,811 tons or USD 11.9 mn.; and mangosteen 117,987 tons or USD62.4 mn. Gaining more export markets will help Thai fruit farmers deal with the problem of oversupply that they face during certain times of the year. But some growers say that export is not a sure bet. Shipping to some destinations is expensive and time-consuming, so the fruits are not fresh when they arrive. There are also concerns over possible side-effects from the irradiation required by countries such as the US. Radiation may shorten the fruits' shelf-life and cause radiation burns that make the fruits less attractive. “Horti ASIA 2012 will be the perfect trade show for Thai exotic fruit growers. Horti ASIA 2012 will also be a marketplace for Thai growers and exporters to find new export markets and sell their products directly to ASEAN and international buyers. At the same time, the show will be a technological showcase for latest technologies and business solutions where fruit producers can search for solutions to improve product quality, prolong shelf-life, manage better cost-effective supply-chain, and strengthen competitive advantages in the world market,” said Mrs. Ladda Mongkolchaivivat, General Manager, N.C.C. Exhibition Organizer Co., Ltd., the organizer of Horti ASIA 2012 together with VNU Exhibitions Europe - one of the world leading exhibition organizers.
