Strong Expansion of High-end Capacity Boosting Singapore’s Clout as a Semiconductor Hub in Asia

Bangkok--22 Feb--SEMI Singapore to achieve 26% YoY growth in 300mm capacity and 40% YoY growth in semiconductor equipment spending in 2011 Singapore’s semiconductor industry is set to continue to expand above trend in 2011 with a strong focus on advanced technology. SEMI predicts a 40 percent year-on- year rise on semiconductor equipment spending in Singapore in 2011, and a 26 percent year-on-year growth for cutting-edge 300mm wafer fabrication capacity. This is above SEMI’s forecast for global 300mm capacity growth of 14 percent and especially significant as it implies continued momentum in the year ahead on top of the strong growth in 2010. According to Terry Tsao, President of SEMI Southeast Asia, “2010 was a bumper year for Singapore’s fab equipment spending with over 100 percent growth. Singapore has grown to be one of the important international hubs in Asia of finance and manufacturing and has demonstrated its importance in the global Semiconductor industry.” Singapore is home to 14 silicon wafer fabrication plants (including four 300mm plants), 20 assembly and test operations, and about 40 integrated circuit (IC) design centres. The world’s top three foundry companies have operations in Singapore as do the top five assembly and test subcontractor companies and nine of the world’s top ten fabless IC design companies. GlobalFoundries (formerly Chartered Semiconductor) is Singapore's biggest chip manufacturing company and plans to invest US$5.4 billion in 2011. Stellar growth is also expected in back-end equipment and materials. Tsao said spending on packaging equipment and materials in the Southeast Asian region is forecast to reach US$5.6 billion while US$600 million is expected to be spent on assembly equipment and US$850-900 million on testing equipment. The growing strength and significance of the semiconductor industry in Asia in general and Singapore in particular is the reason for the rise in prominence of the annual SEMICON Singapore show. Organizers are now in the process of gearing up for SEMICON Singapore 2011 after a very successful recovery year in 2010, and now expect to have this year’s programs offering both market and technical contents with the focus on Manufacturing Efficiency and the cutting edge technologies like TSV and MEMS. SEMICON Singapore 2011, to be held from May 11-13, will feature technology pavilions including MEMS and Hard Disk Drive. Co-located with SEMICON Singapore is the SOLARCON Pavilion and Conference -- the only PV focused exhibition in Southeast Asia. There will also be country pavilions from Singapore, Malaysia, Korea and France. According to Yole D?veloppment, MEMS technology is widely applied into mobile phones, game consoles and consumer products. Analysts forecast that the CAGR of MEMS market is expected to reach 14% from 2010 to 2013. In line with the SEMI’s Singapore Regional Advisory Board’s (RAB) mission to raise the visibility of the semiconductor industry in Singapore, the 2011 SEMICON Singapore will also feature a COO Forum and Manufacturing Efficiency Summit that will look at the global economy from a macro point of view and how electronics contribute to it. The agenda is expected to detail the trends and drive forces in a top-down vision of the semiconductor markets through IDM and Foundries as well as equipment and materials markets, on top of government’s incentive plans to make Singapore the best country for global manufacturing house to set shop in Southeast Asia.
