“An Evening for Bernie Cooper — Fine Food, Fine Wine, Fine Jazz” gala dinner featuring specially created dishes by Thailand’s top chefs and jazz by an array of leading local and international performers, is expected to be a high note, highlight event on Bangkok’s March social calendar and promises to provide a true evening to remember, 7 — 10 pm, at the Grande Ballroom, Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit on Thursday, 24 March 2011.
The event is planned both as a tribute to the late Bernie Cooper who died in January of this year, and a celebration of his status as one of the country’s most widely admired and knowledgeable food and wine writers who sought always to promote the local food and beverage industry, while also writing about jazz with an insight that was instantly recognised by the performers themselves. Once asked why writing about food, wine and jazz seemed to take up so much of his time, Bernie, who enjoyed a promising career as a television and screenplay writer before settling in Thailand, replied, “It’s all about raising our glasses to everything we love.”
“Bernie was more than just a jazz writer. When he was in the mood he could perform with the best,” recalls Alice Day, a regular singer at the Living Room, Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit.
“Bernie would often write and talk about a particular wine with all the cadences and inflections you might expect to see in a review of a music performance. He understood the pleasures of both. That’s what made him special,” says professional violinist and wine importer, Jonathon Glonek.
“An Evening for Bernie Cooper — Fine Food, Fine Wine, Fine Jazz” will include dishes created specially by Chef Norbert A Kostner of the Mandarin Oriental, Chef Gaetano Palumbo, Royal Orchid Sheraton, Chef Martin Faist, Plaza Athenee, Chef Thibault Chiumenti, Plaza Athenee, Chef Gianni Favro, Gianni Ristorante, Chef Michael Gremer, Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, Chef Stefano Merlo, Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit.
Speaking on behalf of all the contributing chefs, Norbert Kostner said, “We’re all honoured to be able to repay Bernie’s consistent reflection of our own passion for our chosen profession by creating something special for a real Bernie Cooper occasion. I am sure the evening will be a huge success, and a great celebration of everything Bernie loved.”
Richard Chapman, General Manager of the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit and one of the event’s organisers said, “All the performers and musicians I have spoken to and whose schedules make their participation possible, have expressed the same sentiment — ‘Let’s make it a really great evening.’ With the star-studded line-up of musicians and singers, plus a celebrity chef menu, it certainly looks set to be great evening and a truly ‘Grande’ event.”
