15 years old Thai racer “Sandy Stuvik” sponsored by The Pizza Company, Dacon and Singha just finished the first 2 official Formula Renault EuroCup test days at Paul Ricard Circuit in France at the beginning of March. The 2011 season of EuroCup kicked off with a total of 41 cars on the track. The participants for this year’s EuroCup counts most of the best young drivers in the world, so the competition is fierce.
Sandy received a brand new race car from Renault and had to spend the first half day to run it in and set it up and by the time the car was ready to run at full speed, the rain had already started. Both Sandy and the team was though very pleased with Sandy’s pace on the wet track, constantly setting times in the top 10. This is Sandy’s rookie year in Europe and therefore important for him to gauge his level against the other racers.
Overnight for the second day, the rain stopped, but the track was still damp in the morning. The team sent Sandy out for the morning session and Sandy was able to set the 5th fastest time on the slippery condition. As the track became completely dry by mid morning, the team tried out different set ups and Sandy started feeling his way around the track. The Paul Ricard Circuit is known as Europe’s premier testing track and is a very fast sweeping track with huge run off areas. (Run-off: asphalt run-off zones replacing gravel beds. The run-offs, highlighted by the red and blue colour strips of the Blue Line? concept, offer crucial advantages for safety through their abrasive surface which slows down vehicles which go off the track.) The facility itself resembles more a 5 star resort then a race track, with its park like atmosphere and excellent facilities. Sandy did though struggle with car confidence in the high speed corners and his times dropped compared to the others in the afternoon, finally ending up with 28th fastest for the day. Sandy and the team know where to find the missing time, and is determined to solve these issues before the next 2 days of testing in a few days at Motorland Aragon in Spain on 6-7 March.
