Ensuring comprehensive environmental management compliance while encouraging more consumers in sustainable environment care
SCG Paper reiterates its sustainable environmental innovation policy by being the first paper manufacturer in Thailand to be certified by FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), comprising both Forest Management (FM) and Chain of Custody (CoC), affirm the company’s sustainable forest management practices from the process of material procurement until the last step of production while engaging consumers to take part in planting of forest and help bring income supplement to the rural community.
Mr. Montree Mahaprukpong, Marketing Director, SCG Paper Plc. said that “As a part of our ongoing commitment to be the ASEAN leader in innovation for sustainable environment, we strive to develop paper products that meet the requirements of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an independent organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. We are the first Thai paper manufacturer to be certified in both the Forest Management (FM) and Chain of Custody (CoC) certifications, which guarantee that our practices comply with FSC policy of the balance of three aspects: economic, social and environmental, from material sourcing to production. This is in line with SCG Paper’s principle for sustainable development.”
The two FSC certifications SCG Paper obtains are as follows:
FSC — Forest Management Certification (FM) — The core objectives of the FM certification include preserve habitat and protect native plant and wildlife in order to retain biodiversity, with at least 10% of plantation area kept as preserve area. The certification is obtained by Siam Forestry, an affiliate of SCG Paper.
FSC — Chain-of-Custody (CoC) — The CoC certification ensures that the wood product is obtained from the forestry plantation where there is no contamination between FSC and non-FSC materials from the raw materials in the forest, all the way to the consumer and the entire supply chain, including all stages of processing, transformation, manufacturing and distribution. SCG Paper’s three subsidiaries obtain FSC CoC certification - Siam Cellulose Co., Ltd. and Phoenix Pulp and Paper PCL. from its printing and writing paper product - Pro Series, and Siam Kraft Industry Co., Ltd. from its packaging paper product.
SCG Paper has started the production line for FSC certified paper products to expand product line and respond to increasing demand of eco-friendly products among environmentally conscious consumers. The current annual production capacity for the FSC FM paper accounts for 100,000 tonnes, or 20% of SCG Paper’s total capacity of 500,000 tonnes, while the annual production of FSC Recycled packaging paper is 280,000 tonnes, or 23% of the total annual production capacity of 1.2 million tonnes. Environmental management certification in consumer products are more and more well received by consumers and play an influential role in their purchasing decision.
Consumers who opt for FSC certified product also take part in growing forest in returning natural environment to the country and help bring income supplement to the rural community. Currently SCG Paper’s FSC-FM certified plantation accounts for a total area of 43,200 rai, and expanding forested area of 8,920 rai, an area equivalent to 24 Lumpini Parks, and bringing 21% additional preserved forest to local communities. Local people in neighboring communities also gain better income from more abundant natural resources in the forested areas.
The FSC certification reinforces SCG Paper’s “sustainable value creation” business principle, which strives to grow business while caring for the society and the environment, a strong proof that the paper industry and the environment can coexist in a sustainable manner.
